Matt Niskanen has been appointed as the new head coach of the Rock Ridge High School boys hockey team. His appointment
was officially confirmed by the school board
this week.
The 37-year-old, originally from Mountain Iron, excelled at Virginia/Mountain Iron-Buhl and
Minnesota Duluth. He celebrated
victory with the Washington Capitals, winning the NHL’s Stanley Cup in 2018.
Niskanen retired from professional hockey at the age of 33 in October 2020, after a successful 13-season career.
<p.Selected by the Dallas Stars in the first round of the 2005 NHL Draft as the 28th overall pick, Niskanen accumulated 356 points (72 goals, 284 assists) in 949 NHL games, representing the Stars, Pittsburgh Penguins, Capitals, and Philadelphia Flyers.
<p.During his senior year at Mountain Iron-Buhl in 2004-05, Niskanen was honored as the all-area player of the year by the Duluth News Tribune in both football and hockey. He played two seasons for the
Bulldogs
from 2005-07, recording 10 goals and 35 assists across 77 games before signing with the Stars after his sophomore year.
<p.Niskanen takes over from Ben Johnson, who served as head coach for Rock Ridge during its initial three seasons following the merger of the Virginia/Mountain Iron and Eveleth-Gilbert teams and school districts. Johnson’s contract was not renewed in the spring, and
he has since joined the coaching staff
of the new Minnesota Wilderness Tier III junior hockey team in Eveleth.
