Sam Mayer’s dreams of securing the championship seemed all but over, but an intense finale offered him a new opportunity to claim a title.
It was a day that began with a black flag and nearly concluded with a second-place finish, yet Mayer’s perseverance drove him to pass fellow NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoff competitor Parker Kligerman on the penultimate lap during a green-white-checkered overtime finish. He successfully held on to win Saturday’s Drive For The Cure 250 presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of NC at the Charlotte Motor Speedway ROVAL™.
Behind the wheel of the No. 1 Chevrolet for JR Motorsports, the 21-year-old from Franklin, Wisconsin, achieved his seventh career NASCAR Xfinity Series victory and his second consecutive triumph at the ROVAL™. Mayer overcame a 13-point playoff deficit at the start of the day and expertly maneuvered past Kligerman during the overtime finish, which followed a late caution issued just before Kligerman took the white flag while leading in regulation.
For Kligerman, who finished sixth due to a tire rub in overtime, there was little more to do than watch Mayer celebrate with a burnout from pit road.
A.J. Allmendinger secured second place, with pole winner Shane Van Gisbergen taking third, Austin Hill in fourth, and Chandler Smith in fifth.
Kligerman, Van Gisbergen, Sheldon Creed, and Riley Herbst were eliminated from championship contention, leaving eight competitors still vying for the title as the season’s final four races loom ahead. Justin Allgaier, who finished seventh, joined Mayer as one of the drivers who started the day outside the championship grid but raced into contention. Allmendinger took Stage 1, while Allgaier won Stage 2.
Mayer was shown the black flag while leading after the first lap for a start violation.
SAM MAYER, NO. 1 JR MOTORSPORTS CHEVROLET (RACE WINNER): “Fortunately, [the caution light] came on early. The final restart was incredible. I managed to turn underneath [Kligerman] coming out of Turn 7, and it worked out perfectly. We aimed to defend our win from last year, and this one feels even sweeter, given the caliber of road-course drivers in the field. This was likely the toughest Xfinity [Series] field on the ROVAL™, and we emerged victorious, which I am incredibly proud of. This morning I stated, ‘If you’re in my way in Turn 7, you won’t have a good day,’ and I meant it for everyone except [Kligerman]. After the last restart, I put him in a tough position and was able to drive away, but we both raced cleanly. I believe this was one of the cleanest Xfinity races on the ROVAL™ in quite some time.”
A.J. ALLMENDINGER, NO. 16 KAULIG RACING CHEVROLET (RUNNER-UP): “We were right on the edge; we were in, but a crash would have knocked us out. I feel for Parker. I thought he had it at the line. Regarding [Mayer] and [Kligerman], considering what was on the line, I found it to be fair. It turned out to be cleaner than I anticipated.”
SHANE VAN GISBERGEN, NO. 97 KAULIG RACING CHEVROLET (THIRD-PLACE FINISHER): “Our car’s speed was impressively good. I was unaware of the points [standings] in the car as the race unfolded. I was doing my best. If you’re depending on others taking each other out, I don’t want to win that way.”
