KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Ross Chastain secured his first victory of the season, arriving a month later than he had hoped, but a victory nonetheless that disrupted the opening race of the NASCAR quarterfinal playoff round.
Despite not qualifying for the playoffs—where only two drivers without wins made NASCAR’s 16-driver championship-eligible field—Chastain made a memorable mark for 2024 by winning the Cup race on Sunday at Kansas Speedway.
Chastain took the lead during a restart with 21 laps remaining, successfully fending off challenges from William Byron to achieve his fifth career win. Late in the race, Chastain and Kyle Busch exchanged the lead for approximately 20 laps until Busch spun out and crashed into the wall with 32 laps to go.
This victory marked Chastain’s first since his last race at Phoenix in the previous season.
“We haven’t gone anywhere,” Chastain remarked. “The only thing that has slowed us down is ourselves, and today we were the fastest car on the track.”
Byron finished in second place, leading the standings in NASCAR’s “Round of 12” while two races remain at Talladega Superspeedway and the Charlotte road course. He was one of the few playoff contenders to avoid significant issues during the race.

“If you’re off someone’s right rear, it can make you very loose, and that’s what seemed to happen. He accelerated to box me in so I couldn’t get ahead of him. As soon as he reached that spot, … it spun him around.”
Busch understood the challenge of overtaking Briscoe. He noted that in previous years, drivers might have been a bit more accommodating.
“I tried to make my move … to get to his outside, and when I did, whatever happened caused all the air to disrupt in the wrong way, and I lost control,” Busch explained.
Briscoe remains in the playoffs, having secured his position by winning an automatic playoff berth during a clean duel with Busch in the regular-season finale at Darlington earlier this month. Should this have led Briscoe to provide Busch with more space?
“It doesn’t really matter what I expect,” Busch stated. “I don’t think anyone gives anything to anyone anymore. It’s all about taking.”

Denny Hamlin Pit Woes
Hamlin faced two sluggish pit stops and even had to make an additional pit due to a loose wheel, forcing him to recover during the second half of the race.
Finishing in eighth place wasn’t satisfactory for Hamlin, who described the day as “horrible.”
“We should have won the race,” Hamlin remarked. “Our car was the fastest, but every time we reached the top three, a caution would come out, and we’d restart in 15th to 20th position.”
“When you’re at the back of the pack, it’s impossible to showcase your car’s speed. … Eventually, the laps run out, and someone else takes the victory.”
Currently, Hamlin is 11 points above the playoff cutoff.
“I can honestly say I’m not in it mentally,” Hamlin stated. ”Things are a bit chaotic right now with wires crossed and bolts loose. But there’s not much to be done; I’ll do my best to drive the car.”

“Our car was solid enough, but it felt like we were battling uphill all day,” Elliott explained. “Having a poor pit selection really hurts… It’s the small issues that can really undermine you after a tough Saturday.”
Bell, who started on the pole for the third consecutive race at Kansas, is still in pursuit of his first win at the venue.
“I just wish I could have those couple of corners back because I made some errors that cost me a lot of track position,” Bell noted. ”Finishing seventh after getting stuck at the back is positive, but I definitely feel there were missed opportunities.”
