While everything is technically open to change until the NHL requires submission of opening-night rosters, a team source confirmed on Saturday that both rookie forward Liam Ohgren and rookie goalie Jesper Wallstedt have secured spots on the Minnesota Wild’s opening night roster.
On the same day, the Wild placed Ben Jones on waivers to facilitate his reassignment to AHL Iowa. They also announced that defenseman Daemon Hunt, who stood out during training camp, would begin the season in Iowa.
The Wild could have chosen to send Ohgren and Wallstedt to Iowa on Saturday or in the coming days, which would have allowed the team to generate some cap space until they are needed. However, management and the coaching staff have determined that both rookies have earned their place on the roster to start the season.
This decision does not automatically guarantee their participation in the opening night game; however, it enables them to remain with the NHL team, practice with the Wild, and ultimately make their season debuts when appropriate.
One somewhat surprising aspect is that even though Ohgren and Wallstedt might not play initially, they account for over $1.8 million in salary cap space. With both players on the roster, the Wild’s cap space falls below $600,000, which is insufficient to acquire another player.
Nonetheless, the Wild find themselves in a better cap situation compared to the start of the previous season, when they were managing 12 forwards, seven defensemen, and two goalies. Currently, they at least maintain the maximum of 23 players, which provides them with one additional forward, one extra defenseman, and one extra goalie.
Although managing the cap will remain a long-term challenge, similar to last season, the Wild have options to create some space. Should the need arise for an additional forward or defenseman, they could send Wallstedt to Iowa.
Additionally, they could place seventh defenseman Jon Merrill on waivers. If Merrill were to play in Iowa, the Wild would save $1.15 million of his $1.2 million salary from their cap.
Wallstedt, at 21, had a record of 1-1 this preseason, posting a 2.52 goals-against average and a .926 save percentage. He played three NHL games last season, winning the last two, including a shutout against Chicago. The Wild are committed to ensuring he gains more NHL experience this season, planning to carry three goalies for a significant part of the season.
Wallstedt is expected to reside in Minnesota but may occasionally be assigned to Iowa to gain game experience, depending on the NHL or AHL schedule, or if the Wild need to free up cap space for another acquisition.
Ohgren, at 20, recorded a goal and an assist during a four-game stint at the end of last season. Although he had a slow start in training camp, he improved in the last three exhibition games, finishing with a goal and an assist over five games.
