GREEN BAY, Wis. — It didn’t take long for Robert Saleh to secure a new position.
Just over two weeks following his dismissal from the New York Jets, Saleh was spotted on the Green Bay Packers’ practice field on Wednesday in a different capacity.
Packers head coach Matt LaFleur, who has acknowledged Saleh’s influence on his journey into the NFL coaching sphere, has brought in his longtime friend to assist the team.
During the early stages of practice, Saleh focused on observing the offensive unit. Despite his defensive coaching history, he will collaborate with LaFleur, who orchestrates the offensive plays, and the offensive coaching team to provide a defensive perspective.

LaFleur mentioned that Saleh’s involvement with the Packers will continue through Thursday this week and described his role as “fluid.”
Saleh and LaFleur first collaborated as graduate assistants at Central Michigan University in 2004. They lived together in an apartment furnished with two beds and a kitchen table, but devoid of chairs.
In 2008, Saleh persuaded then-Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak to hire LaFleur as an offensive assistant. Their bond is so strong that LaFleur was Saleh’s best man at his wedding. Additionally, Saleh hired LaFleur’s brother, Mike, to serve as the Jets’ offensive coordinator during the 2021-22 season.
Out of regard for their friendship, Saleh mentioned during the 2023 offseason, amid trade discussions with the Packers for Aaron Rodgers, that he and LaFleur chose not to discuss the quarterback situation, allowing the general managers of both teams to manage the trade talks.
Saleh also previously worked alongside first-year Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, although he will not be contributing to that side of the ball in Green Bay. Hafley served as the 49ers’ defensive backs coach from 2016 to 2018, and Saleh took on the role of 49ers defensive coordinator in 2017, a position he held until being hired by the Jets in 2021.
Jets owner Woody Johnson terminated Saleh on October 8, following a disappointing 2-3 start to the season, which began with high hopes due to Rodgers’ return from a torn Achilles tendon in the opener of 2023. Over three-plus seasons, Saleh recorded a 20-36 record and failed to lead the Jets to a playoff game.
This season, the Packers do not face the Jets.
This isn’t LaFleur’s first midseason staff adjustment. In November 2022, he welcomed Aubrey Pleasant shortly after Pleasant was released from his position as defensive backs coach with the Lions, allowing Pleasant to assist LaFleur and the offensive coaching team for the remainder of that season.
