After clinching victory at the 2024 YellaWood 500 held at Talladega Superspeedway, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. has brought JTG Daugherty Racing into the limelight. This win marks the team’s first triumph since their success at the Daytona 500 season opener last year.
Although JTG Daugherty Racing has a long history in NASCAR, the Harrisburg-based organization is viewed as a smaller team. It belongs to the group of teams that have participated in the league since the 20th century.
Comparatively, newer teams like 23XI and Trackhouse Racing appear to have more influence in the sport than Stenhouse Jr.’s team.
Let’s delve deeper into the team by exploring the key figures behind it.
JTG Daugherty Owners
Founded in 1994 by the married couple Tad & Jodi Geschickter, JTG Daugherty Racing initially attracted sponsorship from Sunoco. The team began its journey in the Nationwide Series, which is now known as the Xfinity Series, before fully committing to the Cup Series in 2009.
The transition was facilitated by NBA All-Star Brad Daugherty, who became a co-owner in 2008. Daugherty is a former professional basketball player renowned for his time with the Cleveland Cavaliers from 1986 to 1996. With an impressive average of 19 points and 9.5 rebounds per game, his No. 43 jersey was retired in 1997, and he was inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 2001.

Herty Racing established a technical alliance with Michael Waltrip Racing. Nonetheless, in 2014, the team partnered with Richard Childress Racing.
A further modification in the technical division occurred four years later when the team entered into a partnership with Hendrick Motorsports.
In 2016, Gordon Smith became a co-owner of the team. With a background in the maritime industry, he serves as the president of the US-based company, Hyak Maritime. His passion for stock car racing ignited in 2012, which eventually led to his collaboration with Tad and Jodi Geschickter.
A year following Smith’s addition, the team expanded to operate two cars, featuring drivers AJ Allmendinger and Chris Buscher. However, in 2022, the team reverted to a single-entry vehicle.
Currently, this one-chartered organization operates from a 130,000-square-foot facility located in Harrisburg, North Carolina. Though it may still be viewed as small, it has made significant progress since the 90s when it was merely a barn equipped with a few tools.
JTG Daugherty Driver
As previously mentioned, JTG Daugherty Racing has one car competing in the NASCAR Cup Series, driven by Ricky Stenhouse Jr. since 2020. The 37-year-old driver from Mississippi operates the No. 47 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, which he recently drove to victory at the Talladega Superspeedway.
His most notable finish was at the Daytona 500 in 2023, where he benefited from a yellow flag that prevented Joey Logano from securing the win. This victory was significant as it marked the first Daytona 500 win for both the driver and the team.
To date, Stenhouse Jr. has achieved two wins, ten top-5 finishes, and twenty-six top-10 finishes during his five-year tenure with the team. He remains with the No. 47 Chevy after recently signing a multi-year contract extension this past May.
