“Joe used to say that he was once 6-3, but after tackling so many fullbacks, it compressed his neck into his shoulders, so now he measures 6 feet,” recounted the late Lions owner William Clay Ford, who introduced Schmidt at his Hall of Fame induction in 1973. “Regardless, he was officially listed at 6 feet, making him slightly undersized for that position. Notably, there are qualities that scouts or anyone drafting players cannot quantify.”
