Today, Kyle Dubas, President of Hockey Operations and General Manager, announced that the Pittsburgh Penguins have welcomed 69 players to their training camp for the 2024-25 season, sponsored by UPMC.
The roster for training camp (click here) compiled by Dubas and his team consists of 38 forwards, 25 defensemen, and six goaltenders. Additionally, four players—Beau Jelsma, Jagger Joshua, Matt Nieto, and Taylor Gauthier—are present at camp but are currently injured and not cleared for participation.
Training camp kicks off on Wednesday, September 18, at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, where all practices are free and open to the public.
Head Coach Mike Sullivan’s roster comprises 25 players who participated in at least one game with the Penguins last season. Notable returning players include forwards Bryan Rust, Michael Bunting, and Rickard Rakell, along with defensemen Erik Karlsson and Marcus Pettersson, and goaltenders Tristan Jarry and Alex Nedeljkovic.
Captain Sidney Crosby is set to commence his franchise-record 20th season, while alternate captains Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang return for their 19th season together. This marks the longest tenure among any trio of teammates in the history of major North American professional sports.
This season, the Penguins have also introduced a number of new players, including free-agent signings Anthony Beauvillier, Blake Lizotte, Sebastian Aho, and Matt Grzelcyk, along with trade acquisitions Kevin Hayes and Cody Glass.
Furthermore, recently acquired forward Rutger McGroarty, defenseman Owen Pickering (selected 21st overall in 2022), and this year’s top two draft picks—Harrison Brunicke (45th overall) and Tanner Howe (46th overall)—are also part of the training camp.
Defenseman Nikolai Knyzhov is attending Pittsburgh’s training camp on a professional tryout contract.
