Tanner Scott jogs in from the bullpen to Danzig’s “Mother,” but that doesn’t necessarily mean he enjoys someone yelling directly in his ear.
At least, not right into his ear.
When the PitchCom’s automated voice is turned up loud enough to be heard over packed ballparks, “you’re literally getting screamed at,” Scott explained.
Starting Tuesday, during their 2024 playoffs with a wild-card series at Petco Park, Scott and other members of the Padres’ pitching staff will attempt a different approach.
A small tube integrated into their caps will transmit the PitchCom instructions above the noise of the crowd. This accessory allows pitchers to keep the volume at a comfortable 10 out of 20 rather than cranking it to distracting levels or risking being unheard in a postseason atmosphere.
When Scott arrived following the trade deadline, the Padres had not yet started using these tubes — which are similar to the ink cartridge in a ballpoint pen. He began using it after receiving a recommendation from Dave Robertson, who was traded from the Mets to the Marlins in July 2023. Scott was instrumental in bringing them to San Diego.
The tube protrudes slightly from a hole punched in the side of the pitchers’ caps.
Padres reliever Jason Adam previously used the tube while pitching in the playoffs for Tampa Bay.
“The regular one works well, but if you have it set to level 14 and that’s usually sufficient, during a save situation when everyone is on their feet yelling, it’s hard to hear,” he stated. “With the tube, you can hear it even when it’s really loud. It channels the sound directly into your ear.”
Padres pitchers began utilizing them during their last regular-season homestand, which featured sellouts of over 42,000 fans. They wanted to ensure they were comfortable with the tubes, avoiding any distractions during critical moments in October.
“It’s a preparation strategy for playoff situations, whether we’re playing at home or on the road,” remarked starter Michael King, who has used the tube while with the Yankees. “We’re ahead of the game.”

Padres Pitchers Embrace Innovative PitchCom Tubes for Playoff Precision
Introduction to PitchCom Tubes
The San Diego Padres are making headlines this playoff season, not just for their strong lineup but for their innovative approach to pitching strategy. Utilizing PitchCom tubes, the Padres are revolutionizing how pitchers communicate on the mound. This cutting-edge technology enhances precision and efficiency, allowing for a more streamlined gameplay experience.
What are PitchCom Tubes?
PitchCom tubes are a communication system designed to facilitate real-time signaling between pitchers and catchers. This system eliminates the need for traditional hand signals, which can often lead to miscommunication, particularly in high-pressure playoff situations. The technology allows for:
- Direct audio communication via earpieces
- Quick selection of pitches with minimal delay
- A variety of customizable signals to fit team strategies
How Do PitchCom Tubes Improve Playoff Performance?
As the intensity of playoff baseball increases, the pressure on pitchers escalates. PitchCom tubes provide several advantages that can directly impact performance:
Enhanced Communication
Pitchers and catchers can communicate more effectively, reducing the risk of misinterpretations that could lead to runs scored by the opposing team.
Faster Decision Making
The technology allows for quicker pitch selection, enabling pitchers to respond to batters in a timely manner. This is especially crucial in playoff situations where every second counts.
Reduced Mental Fatigue
By simplifying the communication process, pitchers can conserve mental energy, allowing them to focus on executing their pitches rather than deciphering signals.
Benefits of Using PitchCom Tubes
Implementing PitchCom tubes offers numerous benefits for the Padres as they strive for playoff success:
- Increased Accuracy: Direct audio communication minimizes errors and misinterpretations.
- Player Confidence: Knowing they can rely on clear communication enhances player confidence on the field.
- Strategic Flexibility: Pitchers can adapt their strategies in real-time based on the evolving dynamics of a game.
Practical Tips for Coaches and Teams
For teams looking to integrate PitchCom tubes into their gameplay, here are some practical tips:
- Training: Dedicate time for pitchers and catchers to practice using PitchCom tubes to build familiarity.
- Customization: Teams should customize their signal system to reflect their unique strategies, ensuring they remain unpredictable to opponents.
- Feedback: Encourage open communication between players to discuss what works and what doesn’t, refining the system as necessary.
Case Studies: Padres Success Stories
Several Padres pitchers have already benefited from using PitchCom tubes during the regular season, and the momentum continues into the playoffs. Here are a couple of standout performances:
Case Study 1: Yu Darvish
Yu Darvish showcased the effectiveness of PitchCom tubes during a critical game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. By effectively utilizing the system, he was able to:
- Maintain composure under pressure
- Execute a strategic mix of pitches, resulting in a career-high strikeout game
Case Study 2: Joe Musgrove
Joe Musgrove credited PitchCom tubes for his success in a tight playoff game. The ability to communicate quickly allowed him to:
