When the PitchCom’s automated voice is turned up loud enough to be heard over packed ballparks, “you’re literally getting screamed at,” Scott explained.
Starting Tuesday, during their 2024 playoffs with a wild-card series at Petco Park, Scott and other members of the Padres’ pitching staff will attempt a different approach.
A small tube integrated into their caps will transmit the PitchCom instructions above the noise of the crowd. This accessory allows pitchers to keep the volume at a comfortable 10 out of 20 rather than cranking it to distracting levels or risking being unheard in a postseason atmosphere.
When Scott arrived following the trade deadline, the Padres had not yet started using these tubes — which are similar to the ink cartridge in a ballpoint pen. He began using it after receiving a recommendation from Dave Robertson, who was traded from the Mets to the Marlins in July 2023. Scott was instrumental in bringing them to San Diego.

“The regular one works well, but if you have it set to level 14 and that’s usually sufficient, during a save situation when everyone is on their feet yelling, it’s hard to hear,” he stated. “With the tube, you can hear it even when it’s really loud. It channels the sound directly into your ear.”
