Nick Sanchez might be in need of some home cooking.
The second-year driver in the NASCAR Truck Series playoffs has qualified for his second Round of 8, despite finishing P22 in the series’ most recent event at Talladega Superspeedway on October 4. His name also came up in news reports for an incident involving Matt Crafton.
For Sanchez, the last three weeks have been quite lengthy, as he currently ranks seventh in the postseason standings, trailing Ty Majeski by 20 points. Grant Enfinger, who won the Round of 8 opener at Talladega, was the first driver to secure a place at next month’s Championship 4 event.
By returning to the venue where he began racing go-karts at age 12, Sanchez plans to leverage his connection with the 1.5-mile oval to accumulate playoff points.
“I approach the race with the mindset that I need to win, as if I’m in a must-win situation,” Sanchez shared in an interview with WSVN Miami. “I want to secure the pole position, win both stages, lead every single lap, and ultimately come out on top. That’s my standard.”
In his 20 Truck starts this season, Sanchez has achieved two victories and secured 12 top-10 finishes. Being one of the few Cuban American drivers in major stock-car racing series, he is acutely aware of the attention he attracts each time he races at Homestead-Miami, or elsewhere.
“It doesn’t matter where I go in this country; there’s always a Hispanic fan who recognizes the last name Sanchez,” he remarked. “When people think of Miami, it’s not often associated with race cars or racing. To come from there, to grow up in Miami, where all my family resides, and to win in a sport that is quite rare for a native of Miami to participate in, especially NASCAR, is really special.”
Meet Nick Sanchez!
