Manchester United often seems to be caught in a whirlwind; with attention fixed upon them and the volume of criticism turned up high, the pressure feels unrelenting.
Having recorded the worst start in Premier League history for the club, along with remaining winless in five consecutive matches across all competitions, it certainly provides ample reason for observers to shout ‘chaos.’
However, at Carrington, Jonny Evans presents a calmer narrative of a squad striving to overcome the negativity, rectify their shortcomings, and showcase their true potential.
He attributes his ability to endure intense speculation regarding his job security to Erik ten Hag; a topic that was prevalent during the international break.
In an exclusive interview with Sky Sports News, the centre-back shares insights regarding the dressing room dynamics, the defensive adjustments implemented by United, and the communications from the coaching staff amidst another challenging period…
‘The manager demonstrates true strength’
Evans on Ten Hag: “He is a remarkably strong-minded individual, and I truly respect him for that. His principled approach toward his work and personal conduct remains steadfast.
“He exudes genuine strength regarding his identity and aspirations. I commend him for having the fortitude and determination to persist. He consistently maintains a positive outlook, and his message remains unwavering. This consistency is crucial – I suppose it’s the coaches’ role to foster an environment and culture within the club that encourages continuous effort to enhance both our performance and league standing.
“You can take positives from the defensive aspects of the game. We aim to score more goals, and from their viewpoint, it’s essential to focus on improvement rather than being swayed by external noise.
“Recently, Ruud [van Nistelrooy] mentioned that football is about revisiting the joy of play, reminiscent of childhood when competing was the primary thrill. Everyone aspires to reach that space where they are unaffected by outside distractions and can deliver their best performance each week. That’s the ultimate goal for every footballer, to play with joy and a smile.
“Naturally, we have high expectations to win matches, and the enjoyment multiplies when we secure victories.”
Building off the defence

Evans on the defense: “The manager has consistently aimed to implement a high-pressing style of play. He has emphasized understanding when we need to defend deeper and whether we can effectively do so. I believe we are still refining this aspect, and I think the manager is quite satisfied with our progress.”
“This season, we’ve likely shifted to a more zonal approach in our defensive strategy. The new coaches, especially Ruud, have significantly influenced our game analysis, ensuring we pay attention to every little detail and positioning ourselves correctly.
“I believe that we’ve made strides defensively, and to secure victories, a strong defense is crucial. Conversely, we also need to focus on scoring more goals to enhance that aspect of our performance.”
Underperforming Expected Goals
Evans comments on the goalscoring challenges: “It’s reasonable to expect that increasing our goal tally will lead to improved results.
“Our defensive capabilities have enhanced, which is encouraging. This is an issue our manager has tackled, especially as we approach matches following the international break, and it’s not solely the responsibility of our forward players.
“I believe we’re positioning ourselves well. However, our final ball must improve. Once we manage to score a goal or two, gaining confidence in our gameplay will allow us to be more patient in the opposition’s box, selecting the right paths and making better decisions.”

When asked whether the issue is more psychological than physical, Evans responded: “I don’t sense that. I don’t believe there is a problem within the squad.”
“It’s easy to speculate about this when things aren’t going our way—can they handle the pressure? I’m not sure. That’s not something quantifiable. Yet, I don’t perceive that kind of sensation within the squad either.”
‘The dressing room is pushing’
Evans regarding the players’ determination to improve: “You can see it in how the lads train daily, the professionalism within the group, and you can sense it during the games as well.”
