BROOKLYN, MI –– As Logan Brown made his way through the infield at Michigan International Speedway, his boots kicked up dirt while he adjusted a flamingo pool float around his waist and savored the last drops of a Busch Light.
“It feels like a family reunion, man,” remarked Brown, 23, from Traverse City. “Three years ago, I was just a rookie, and now I’m not, so it’s f—-n’ hype.”
Although attendance for NASCAR events at MIS has dwindled over the years, the infield has been sold out for three straight seasons.
“Everyone around here is really friendly. I’d say the bars are my favorite, followed by the race,” said Brown. “Making the trip to the infield from the outer areas is a completely different experience. It’s just not the same.”

A few steps down the path, Tim Sayer, 32, from Manhattan, Illinois, was serving complimentary drinks beneath a large canopy bar.
His sign proclaimed, “Shenanigan’s.”
“We started this in 2018 with just a little pop-up tent,” Sayer shared. “We expanded as more people showed up. It’s all about hospitality, you know? Everything is free; we don’t charge for anything. We offer drinks, hang out, give out T-shirts, whatever. We just love the NASCAR fans.”
According to Sayer, the infield has a familial vibe—just like it did when it began.
“Our grandfather set this up in the ‘70s,” Sayer noted.
Their grandfather, Bruce, later handed it down to his son, Mike Johnson, who is now 67 years old.
“I’ve been here 52 years in a row, except for CO
“I was 15 years old the first time I came here,” Johnson recounted. “There’s just something about it that gets you hooked. For about 35 years, I’ve been in the same spot, and every year, it feels like a reunion with those around me.”
“It all started with my dad, and although he has since passed away, we continue to come here. We have no intentions of stopping.”

Johnson attributes the transformation of Shenanigan’s to Sayer. These days, he often goes to sleep while the real party is just beginning.
“Those who don’t participate don’t really get it,” Johnson explained. “‘So you park in the grass for four days; what do you do?’ You can do as little or as much as you want. I used to drink heavily, but as I’ve gotten older, my perspective has changed. Every moment is enjoyable; there’s nothing dull about it. I get up in the morning and make breakfast for everyone.”
As the day’s races unfold, fans in the infield continually move between their buses and the grandstands, enjoying every moment.
They often have a beer in hand and may even have a kiddie pool set up to cool off, though this isn’t guaranteed.
The camping setups range from luxurious RVs costing hundreds of thousands of dollars to simple tents.
Campers enjoy breaking off into various activities scattered throughout the grounds of the 2-mile, D-shaped oval.

John Bishop, 30, from Warren, decided to engage in a Super Mario Smash Bros. Tournament with his friends, where the winner earned a trophy that proudly stood in their tent.
“My buddy Brian and I are massive NASCAR fans, and this event has transformed into a reunion for all our high school friends,” Bishop explained. “It’s NASCAR, but also a special occasion when we all come together once a year.”
Throughout the year, this group enjoys gaming together online and organizes their MIS weekend plans via Discord, coordinating breakfast, dinner, and supplies among themselves.
Bishop noted that every year, their campsite continues to improve.
“We actually got trash cans for the first time this year,” he remarked.
