Let me take a moment to introduce myself.
It’s possible that many of you are already familiar with me. For the past decade, I’ve reported on the Colorado Avalanche for various media outlets.
If you haven’t had the chance to read my articles, no worries. We’re all hockey fans here, and I’m sure we can still connect.
I’m Evan Rawal, and I’m the new addition covering the Avalanche and the NHL for The Denver Gazette. While I’d prefer to focus on hockey rather than myself, I’d like to share what you can expect from my work.
<p class="Paragraph SC
Many individuals have a clear idea of their aspirations from an early age, and I suppose I was among them. The arrival of the Avalanche transformed my life as hockey became my passion (yes, I am a local), and it has been a constant ever since. I began my journey playing hockey at age 8 with the Foothills Hockey Association, and I continue to play even now, though my joints aren’t as flexible as they once were. I participated in AAA hockey and spent some time in Junior hockey, but I wasn’t naive. The NHL was not a realistic goal for me.
Therefore, if I wanted to pursue my dreams,
In order to maintain a connection to the sport I cherish , I had to seek an alternative approach.
It’s fortunate that I’m comfortable with writing.
My background as a player often influences my writing style. Readers can count on daily updates being a consistent element of my coverage, which includes conversations with players in the locker room. However, I take pride in my ability to dissect the game. That’s where the real enjoyment lies. What went awry in the second <span class="EOP SCXW245918233 BCX0
What goals
did the Avalanche concede?
What strategies did they implement in a game they
controlled?
And
how in the world
does
Cale Makar achieve what he does?
Alright,
no one
may be able to thoroughly explain the latter
, however
I will
definitely give it a shot.
If
you’re
looking for comprehensive
hockey
coverage,
I believe
you’ll find it here at the Denver Gazette. It
It won’t just revolve around the Avalanche, either. As a hockey enthusiast, I’m likely to be watching hockey even on my days off. I simply can’t resist it. Whether it’s the NHL, AHL, NCAA, or KHL, it doesn’t matter.
Whenever there’s hockey on TV, you can bet that I’m making an effort to tune in, though I may often find myself watching on my phone while my 7-year-old takes over the television.
I’m eager to kick things off here.
It’s the most marvelous season of the year: hockey.
Alright. Enough about me. Let’s discuss hockey.

—During the week of training camp, two elements have remained consistent. First, the “Roaring 20s” trio has returned as the third line. Second, Jared Bednar is keeping Nathan MacKinnon, Jonathan Drouin, and Mikko Rantanen on the top line.
Although they will likely play with different forwards during preseason games, you can anticipate seeing them together on the ice.
Don’t be surprised if Bednar opts for familiarity when the regular season kicks off rather than distributing opportunities evenly.
“At times, it’s essential to depend on your star players,” Bednar remarked. “This season might require that right from the start.”
—It would truly be quite surprising if Pierre-Edouard Bellemare, who is currently participating in training camp on a PTO, didn’t secure an NHL contract. The Avalanche requires a fourth-line center and he fits that role exceptionally well. He excels in face-offs, penalty killing, and can help fill the leadership gap left by Andrew Cogliano’s retirement. While it may seem like a certainty that he’ll secure a position, he’s not approaching it that way.
“I’m currently healthy, and …
“I’m eager to demonstrate my commitment, to show that I can be a valuable asset to the team,” Bellemare expressed.
—The Colorado Avalanche will start the season missing three key top-six wingers: Artturi Lehkonen, Gabriel Landeskog, and Valeri Nichushkin. Although Lehkonen might be back shortly after the regular season kicks off, it is expected to take longer for the other two players to return. Consequently, there are opportunities available on the NHL roster, and it’s evident that the Avalanche are keen for Calum Ritchie to claim one of those positions.
All the circumstances seem favorable for the 19-year-old first-round selection to step up in this situation.
The NHL season is about to commence, and teams are eager to evaluate new talent. Among those vying for a spot, one player stands out due to his remarkable skills: he leads the way in talent and offers the Avalanche an opportunity to utilize the initial month of the season to determine if he is fully prepared. If he isn’t quite ready, the team has the option to reassign him back to the Ontario Hockey League for an additional year of development. It’s sensible for the Avalanche to take this time to evaluate his capabilities.
—There remains at least one vacant wing position. Throughout training camp and the onset of the preseason, one individual has distinguished himself from the competition: Nikolai Kovalenko. The 24-year-old winger has demonstrated exceptional talent in Russia over the last two years, and his professional experience is becoming apparent. He received accolades from Bednar during training camp and recently delivered a standout performance with two assists against a Dallas Stars lineup filled with veterans on Friday.
Despite his smaller stature, he has proven to be a formidable player,
He’s incredibly competitive and willing to engage in the physical aspects of the ice. Coach Bednar has repositioned him during camp to team up with a variety of players, and he’s adapted well to each of them. This versatility could bolster his chances when the Avalanche finalize their roster choices next week.
—The NHL preseason is excessively long. To be frank, so is the regular season. However, that’s unlikely to change, so there’s no purpose in dwelling on it.
The Colorado Avalanche will participate in six preseason games, while some teams will compete in as many as eight. Eight! And until the preseason concludes, you <span class="E
It’s likely we won’t see Nathan MacKinnon or Cale Makar participate in more than two preseason games, and that might still be considered excessive. Organizations certainly want to evaluate all players, and we must remember that the league operates for profit. However, the Avalanche hardly sent any NHL regulars to Dallas for their second preseason matchup. Who would want to buy a ticket for that?
—Don’t be surprised if the Avalanche decide to carry eight defensemen at the season’s start while going with just 12 forwards. Sam Malinski has been impressive in training camp, and I can’t envision him clearing waivers if the Avalanche attempt to sneak him through, especially with a team like Los Angeles missing Drew Doughty for several months. The finalization of the starting six for opening night remains undecided, but Jared Bednar will have the flexibility to adjust lineups depending on opponents and players’ performance. Having options is always beneficial.
