BROOKLYN, MI — High velocities and excellent fishing are just a couple of the attributes that NASCAR Cup Series driver Martin Truex Jr. appreciates during his visits to Michigan.
This weekend, however, at Michigan International Speedway, he will savor one of those experiences for the last time. The New Jersey native is set to retire from full-time Cup racing after the 2024 season, indicating that Sunday’s FireKeepers Casino 400 could be Truex’s final appearance at MIS.

One distinctive feature of MIS is its speed. Unlike Daytona and Talladega, where horsepower is limited, Michigan permits drivers to fully unleash their cars.
“I’ve always enjoyed this track,” Truex remarked in an MLive interview. “The high speeds … it’s a thrilling place. It challenges everything you’ve got.”
The speeds reached at the 2-mile, D-shaped oval are the highest across all NASCAR tracks.
“It’s incredibly fast,” Truex said, chuckling. “It’s so vast and open. Watching on TV doesn’t really capture it, but when you experience it live, it’s like, ‘Wow.’ I believe the fastest we’ve ever gone on any track was at Michigan, hitting over 220 (mph) or something astonishing along those lines.”

The vehicles that Truex has raced over the last two decades have undergone significant changes.
“(MIS) has become more demanding on tires, trickier to handle, and generally more challenging. This evolution is a positive development. Achieving speed now requires top-notch equipment and an excellent setup. I would say the cars are easier to drive and it’s simpler to achieve fast times (at MIS) compared to before.”
Despite being a fan of MIS, the 44-year-old driver has not yet found himself in victory lane there. He made his first appearance at MIS in 2004 in the Xfinity Series, where he secured a third-place finish, establishing his competitive edge at the venue.
With 11 top-five finishes across 33 Cup starts at MIS, Truex’s record includes four second-place and six third-place finishes. Notably, he has landed in the top 10 in each of the past seven races held at MIS.
“It’s one of those tracks where we’ve encountered some bad luck in our pursuit of a victory,” Truex remarked. “We’ve had numerous strong performances there, especially recently. It would be incredible to achieve our first win there during what might be our last visit.”
Last year, Truex led for 47 laps and was in a fierce battle with Chris Buescher as they entered the final lap, ultimately finishing in second place.

Although Michigan may not be viewed as a conventional racing market, Truex believes the state exudes a genuine enthusiasm for the sport.
“There’s a lot of excitement. With no other races nearby, fans travel from great distances to attend. It appears that everyone enjoys themselves; the track does an excellent job of providing fans with a fantastic experience.”
He acknowledges that a distinctive aspect of the MIS experience is how well drivers can hear the fans enjoying themselves in the infield.
“The campgrounds really tell the story,” Truex commented. “The infield parties at night can get quite lively, and that’s what it’s all about. You can hear them throughout the night.”

Off the racetrack, Truex developed a strong affection for the state. He often visited Michigan for several years, largely due to his late partner, Sherry Pollex, who hailed from Brighton. Their relationship spanned 18 years, during which Truex frequently traveled to Michigan and explored Northern Michigan’s natural beauty. As an enthusiastic fisherman, he discovered some of the finest locations in the state to cast his line.
Although Truex has fished in nearly every region of the country, he acknowledges that fishing in Michigan offers a unique experience.
“What has always drawn me in is the amazing fisheries and the pristine waters. Places like Traverse City have water that resembles the Caribbean, which is surprising to many,” Truex remarked. “The deep, clear lakes, the cold water, and the smallmouth fishing that I cherish in that area … I always enjoy it. It’s truly a beautiful region.”
Truex mentioned that fans might see him fishing on a boat in Michigan waters after he retires from racing.

Looking toward the rest of the season, Truex aims to make a significant impact. Following a disappointing playoff performance in 2023, the driver of the No. 19 car is determined to finish strong. Although a mechanical failure cut his race short last Sunday at Richmond Raceway, Truex remains optimistic about returning to Michigan.
“I feel very positive about our chances this weekend,” Truex stated. “It’s been a challenging season in terms of securing a victory … we haven’t achieved many strong finishes, but we’ve shown excellent speed and frequently find ourselves near the front. We just need to perform well and avoid significant setbacks, and I believe we’ll be right in contention for the win.”
Currently, Truex holds the eighth position in points, outpacing all drivers without a victory in 2024. Although securing a win isn’t a requirement for entering the playoffs, capturing a checkered flag on Sunday would certainly be beneficial.
