Unfortunately, Martin Truex Jr.’s farewell tour in full-time racing is set to position him more as a potential spoiler rather than a contender for the NASCAR Cup Series championship.
On September 21, Truex finished in 24th place during the Bass Pro Shops Night race at Bristol Motor Speedway, which led to his elimination from the Cup Series playoffs.
“You never want to disappoint anyone, regardless of the circumstances,” Truex expressed right after the race. “I regret what happened tonight.”
His downward finish was marked by a speeding penalty on pit road; he was penalized for exceeding the speed limit by 0.09 mph on lap 333 amidst the last caution. This infraction relegated him to 26th position for the final restart, moving him out of the playoff contention.
Starting the race 16 points behind the 12th place which would have secured his progression to the next playoff round, the No. 19 Toyota performed commendably in the first two-thirds of the race. Truex accumulated 16 stage points while running second, trailing only eventual winner Kyle Larson, who led 462 of the 500 laps.
However, after the speeding violation, the Stafford Township native struggled to make further gains, moving up just two spots for the remainder of the event.
“It’s incredibly frustrating when a mere 0.09 mph derails your shot at a successful season. I genuinely didn’t realize I was that close. It felt like I was doing everything the same way as always,” Truex lamented. “This is on me, without a doubt. It was communicated that we needed to finish second or third to have a chance. I’m not sure if we could have achieved that, but it would have been exciting to find out.”
Clearly disheartened by his Bristol performance, Truex aimed to focus on the positive aspects of the remaining season, which includes seven more races.
“It’s just really disappointing for my team. They put in so much effort,” he stated. “We had a strong car tonight and scored a lot of stage points, accomplishing what we needed to do, but I hate that I messed it up. I wish we could have at least tried to see if we could make it. It would have been enjoyable to have a fighting chance. Moving forward, we will push hard to hopefully return to Victory Lane before the season concludes.”
Currently sitting in 14th place in the driver standings, Truex has yet to taste Victory Lane this season, having only finished in the top five on four occasions.
