NASCAR’s NextGen package has been a subject of debate among racing enthusiasts, particularly concerning the tire falloff compared to older eras. Mark Martin, a NASCAR legend and second-highest winner in the Xfinity Series, recently shared a throwback memory on social media, highlighting the difference.
In a post about his Hooters 500 victory at Atlanta Motor Speedway in 1994, Martin pointed out the visible tire falloff on his car’s hood. “Look at the hood,” he wrote. “Tires were gummy back then. They just make black powder now days.”
Back in the day, drivers had a choice between Hoosier Tire Co. and Goodyear Tires, creating a rivalry that started in 1988. However, Goodyear became the official tire provider for NASCAR in April 1997. That same year, Martin won the Winston 500, setting a record speed of 188.354 miles per hour, his second consecutive victory and the second of the season. Before retiring in 2013, Martin added 20 more Cup victories to his trophy cabinet.
Inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2017, Martin now resides in Batesville, Arkansas with his wife, Irlene. The 65-year-old enjoys a post-racing life that often involves touring the country in his RV.
Mark Martin hails Martin Truex Jr. as “one of the great ones”

Comparing their driving styles, the fan acknowledged the similarities between the two drivers. Martin responded by calling Truex “one of the great ones.”
The fan’s post received several likes and comments, with many agreeing with Martin’s assessment of Truex Jr. as a talented driver.
