Luka Garza recognized that he had one final opportunity. A fortunate twist of fate brought it to him.
When the Minnesota Lynx made it to the WNBA Finals, it created a scheduling conflict with the Timberwolves at Target Center. Game 4 of the best-of-five series is set for Friday evening in Minnesota, coinciding with the Timberwolves’ matchup against the Denver Nuggets in their fifth and final preseason game.
To resolve the scheduling clash, the Wolves and Nuggets moved their game up a day. This adjustment resulted in the Wolves facing a rare preseason back-to-back, with a game in Chicago on Wednesday night followed by the Nuggets game on Thursday.
If the Wolves had a day off between matches, it’s likely that coach Chris Finch would have utilized his starters extensively to enhance their chemistry with recently acquired Julius Randle, who missed the first three preseason games before playing against the Bulls.
Due to the back-to-back schedule, Finch opted to rest the top nine players in the Wolves’ rotation, including their three stellar big men: Randle, Rudy Gobert, and Naz Reid. For one of the few instances in Minnesota, Garza found himself in the starting lineup against the Nuggets. He was aware that significant playing time awaited him, providing one last chance to demonstrate that he truly belonged.
“I understand how infrequent opportunities like this arise, especially in such circumstances. To play against the best player in the world and start against him is an incredible opportunity. I aimed to go out there, remain present, and not let this chance slip away,” Garza stated.
Garza has consistently made the most of the opportunities presented to him throughout his basketball journey. He scored 29 points on 11-of-17 shooting, sank three 3-pointers, and secured nine rebounds in nearly 33 minutes against the reigning NBA MVP Nikola Jokić. Although the Wolves lost 132-126, considering that Denver fielded its top eight players for almost three quarters, it was a commendable performance.

Jokić seemed to approach the game with a relaxed demeanor, taking just one shot in his 18 minutes during the first half and rotating defensively roughly every fifth possession.
This is where a player like Garza can capitalize. Veterans in the league often remark that playing hard is itself a skill. Garza’s eagerness for this opportunity was palpable minutes into the game as he competed against his favorite player.
This relentless approach is all he knows, a method he developed as a kid in the Washington, D.C. area. When trying to join neighborhood games, skeptical teammates would often overlook the tall, uncoordinated White kid. Garza soon realized that, to get his hands on the ball, he needed to take the initiative.
“I had to figure out how to get the ball, and that meant going after it off the glass,” Garza recalled. “That was where I began.”
The dedication he shared with his father, Frank, ultimately helped him achieve the title of national player of the year during his college career at Iowa. Despite this, he was selected in the second round (No. 52 overall) of the 2021 NBA Draft. After spending a season with the Detroit Pistons, he is now in his third season with the Timberwolves, having previously played behind one of the league’s top big man rotations featuring Gobert and Karl-Anthony Towns in the starting frontcourt and the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Naz Reid coming off the bench.

Anytime spent with the Wolves’ G League affiliate in Iowa resulted in him dominating to a level that almost did not seem fair.
In nine games with Iowa in 2022-23, Garza averaged 29.8 points, 9.2 rebounds and shot 50 percent from deep. He played three games there last season and went for 36.7 points in 36.0 minutes per game to go along with 12.3 rebounds per game.
He showed that he was too good for that level, and now it is time for him to prove he is capable of joining an NBA rotation. Garza has had his moments in the league, scoring 20 points in a game three times as a rookie, two with the Pistons and one with the Timberwolves after getting traded. He scored 25 in a win over Utah in his second season and last season had 11 points and six rebounds in emergency duty while Gobert and Towns were both out.
“He gives you everything he’s got,” Finch said. “He’s got a ton of game, battles, takes charges, stands people up, fights. I thought he was really good tonight.”

There is a scenario this season where Garza is not just an “in case of emergency, break glass” type of player.
The Wolves traded Towns to the Knicks right before training camp started, dramatically changing the look and feel of their team. Gone is the unconventional two-big starting five with Towns and Gobert next to each other. Randle has taken KAT’s spot in the starting lineup (and in the locker room, where he has moved into Towns’ old locker), but is a much more conventional power forward. He is smaller, but stronger, than KAT and fits the spot of a traditional power forward that the Timberwolves did not have in their starting group last season.
Last season, Towns would start at power forward and then become the backup center to Gobert with the second unit. This season, with Towns gone to New York, the Wolves will have to be more creative in how they deploy minutes at center when Gobert rests. Maybe Reid plays there some, though he seems to have settled in more at the 4 and even shown some ability to play small forward. Maybe Randle gets a lot of those minutes in a small-ball lineup.
Or maybe Garza can earn a few of those minutes on certain nights. The path is much clearer for him this season, and he spent all summer preparing for it as well. He has worked tirelessly on his defense, long considered to be the biggest shortcoming that keeps him from playing NBA rotation minutes. He also has worked to lose weight and add muscle to help increase his foot speed and quickness.
With so much talent in front of him, even after the KAT trade, Garza can’t afford to slow down.
“Being in this league, you kind of see the margin for error, especially in the bottom half of the roster is so slim,” Garza said. “There are so many players who are incredibly talented. (Some) can’t make it because they can’t handle some of the stress, or they can’t come in every single day with that same consistent attitude and approach. And for me, it’s natural.”

Those habits are already leaving an impression on Rob Dillingham, Minnesota’s 19-year-old rookie point guard.
“Luka’s crazy because you watch Luka work every day and he comes in and he works the same,” Dillingham said. “He might not get a chance every game, but he always is ready. It just shows from the weight room to the gym to everybody. Just watching him makes you want to play with him because you know he’s been working.”
There are still going to be obstacles in his way. How he handles the defensive end is a work in progress. Finch joked earlier in the preseason that he would like to see Garza, an aggressive shooter, pass the ball one time.
Right now, there does not seem to be a regular rotation spot for him on one of the deepest teams in the league. Finch said he will play 10 guys to start the season, and it appears that Garza, Dillingham and Josh Minott are competing for the 11th spot right now.
That’s what made Thursday night so important for Garza. He knows he is on the outside of the rotation looking in at the moment. He knows there is more work to be done. And so he will do what he’s always done. He will just keep going.
“There’s more growing to do. You’ve got to (work) until it’s undeniable,” Garza said. “And it’s not at that level yet. And I know that and I understand that. And that’s what the mindset is now.”
