Throughout the 26-race regular season of the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series, Kaulig Racing expanded to a third entry only twice. However, in the initial six races of the unique four-round, 10-race postseason, they have already done so on three occasions, including the last two events.
At Talladega Superspeedway two weeks ago, A.J. Allmendinger piloted the non-chartered No. 13 Chevrolet for the fourth time this season, while Shane van Gisbergen made his ninth appearance of the year in the chartered No. 16 Chevrolet.
During the recent weekend at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval, the pair exchanged cars, representing the first instance in 2024 when a driver other than Allmendinger took the wheel of the No. 13 vehicle. Allmendinger, who competed full-time in the No. 16 car last year and secured victory at the Roval, drove it for an impressive 11th time this season.
Following their initial stretch of two races where they fielded three cars — marking just the second time in their history — Kaulig Racing will revert to two cars for the Las Vegas Motor Speedway race this Sunday.
The entry list for the 267-lap South Point 400, which takes place on the 1.5-mile (2.414-kilometer) oval in Las Vegas, Nevada, does not include the No. 13 Chevrolet.
During the March event at this track, Derek Kraus drove the No. 16 Chevrolet, marking his debut in the Cup Series, where he finished in 28th place. This weekend, van Gisbergen is scheduled to drive the No. 16 car for the 10th time this year.
Van Gisbergen’s only previous Cup Series race on a traditional 1.5-mile oval took place in May at Charlotte Motor Speedway during the Coca-Cola 600, where he also finished in 28th.
So far this year, the No. 16 car has been driven by five different drivers. Besides van Gisbergen and Allmendinger, both Ty Dillon and Kraus have completed five races, while Josh Williams, a full-time teammate of van Gisbergen and Allmendinger on Matt Kaulig’s Xfinity Series team, has participated in two.
The team’s full-time second entry, the No. 31 Chevrolet, is consistently piloted by Daniel Hemric.
Regarding the rest of the entry list, the only non-chartered vehicle this weekend is the No. 84 Toyota from Legacy Motor Club, which is set to be driven by team co-owner Jimmie Johnson for the eighth time this year.
