MONTREAL — Kaapo Kakko seems genuinely astonished as he realizes this marks his sixth season in the NHL.
Debuting at the age of 18 and remaining with the same organization throughout his career certainly contributes to the feeling of being in overdrive.
At 23 years old now, Kakko has participated in 305 regular-season games and 44 playoff matches since he was drafted second overall in 2019.

However, it’s not merely the passage of time and familiarity that gives Kakko the sensation that it’s all moving too quickly.
The role Kakko has filled for much of his tenure with the Rangers has remained largely unchanged.
“It’s kind of crazy,” Kakko shared with The Post following practice on Monday afternoon at Bell Centre. “Time is flying by. I feel like I’m playing the same role as last year. The expectations aren’t extremely high; we’ll see what unfolds. I strive to give my best regardless of how much ice time I receive.”
Given the circumstances under which Kakko entered the NHL, it’s natural for any player to desire more, and it’s clear that the Finnish forward does.
Over the years, three different Rangers coaches have attempted to provide him with more opportunities within the top six, yet Kakko has struggled to consistently produce at that level.
Though this has often placed Kakko on the third line during his NHL career, many of those line combinations have been essential to the Rangers’ success.
The current trio of Kakko, Filip Chytil, and Will Cuylle has emerged as one of the NHL’s most effective units early in the season.
They remain unscathed on the ice, yet to concede a five-on-five goal, and as of Monday afternoon, they lead all NHL lines in expected goals for with 4.8, according to MoneyPuck.com.
Whether it’s dominating the offensive zone, cycling with puck possession, or creating opportunities around the net, the Rangers’ third line has showcased the ability to relieve scoring pressure from the top six — although the results have yet to materialize.
Despite being on the ice for five Rangers goals, the line of Kakko, Chytil, and Cuylle has managed to produce only two goals collectively.
Following Chytil’s season opener goal, Cuylle netted the game-tying score that took the Rangers into overtime during their 6-5 defeat to Utah.

In total, they have taken 28 shots as a line, but fortune has not favored them thus far.
“When you execute the right plays on the ice, the results usually follow,” head coach Peter Laviolette stated. “If a line executes properly and remains in the offensive zone while generating chances, I believe the numbers will reflect their performance, as they are three talented players.”
While it may not be the glamorous top-six position Kakko envisioned six seasons ago, it is nevertheless a vital component of the Rangers’ system that aligns well with his playing style.
It seems this line is on the verge of finding their offensive rhythm.
If they are to succeed, Kakko will play a pivotal role in making it happen.
“Having chances out there certainly boosts your confidence,” Kakko remarked. “You generally feel good after those moments. There have been games where we’ve struggled, particularly in the defensive zone. That presents challenges. But when we’re creating opportunities, we usually feel positive. The goals will eventually come.”
