K-WINGS ANNOUNCE NEW ASSISTANT COACHES, SAY GOODBYE TO KOHL SCHULTZ
Kalamazoo finalizes coaching staff for 2024-25 season.
KALAMAZOO, MI – On Monday, the Kalamazoo Wings, the proud ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s Vancouver Canucks, officially announced the departure of former assistant coach Kohl Schultz, who has accepted a position with HC Pustertal (ICEHL), along with the hiring of two new assistant coaches, Billy McCreary and Jonathon Elliott, to enhance the team’s coaching staff for the upcoming 2024-25 season.
“Both of these coaching additions embody our organization’s values and commitment, and they will be key contributors in our quest for a championship,” stated Joel Martin, head coach and director of hockey operations for the Kalamazoo Wings. “Kohl played an essential role in shaping our team and culture over the last two seasons. I sincerely appreciate his dedication and hard work for our organization, and we wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”
Schultz, originally from Kansas City, MO, contributed to the K-Wings’ success, leading them to the Kelly Cup Playoffs during his second year and managing to develop one of the strongest power play units in the ECHL in the latter half of the 2023-24 season with an impressive 25.3% efficiency.
“My experience in Kalamazoo truly reflects the essence of the ECHL, which is growth,” Schultz remarked. “I owe immense gratitude to Marty and the K-Wings leadership for helping me evolve as a coach. McCreary joins the K-Wings staff following his role as president and director of hockey operations for the Danbury Jr. Hat Tricks (NAHL | 2022-24) and as head coach and general manager of the Danbury Hat Tricks (FPHL | 2019-20, 2022-24).
“I want to express my gratitude to Joel Martin for placing his trust in me and allowing my family to make Kalamazoo our home,” McCreary stated. “It is a true honor to represent one of the most esteemed franchises in professional hockey. This organization has exemplary leadership at every level, and I am eager to infuse my passion into the team.”
The native of Southhampton, ON, had a playing career that spanned six seasons across various levels from 2007 to 2012, culminating in an SPHL Championship victory with Huntsville in 2009-10 after competing at the collegiate level for Providence and Curry colleges (2003-07).
Elliott joins Kalamazoo after spending the last two years with Miami University (NCAA), first as the director of hockey operations during the 2022-23 season and then as an assistant coach in the subsequent season. Before his tenure with the RedHawks, the Bloomfield Hills, MI native served four seasons as an assistant coach at Saint Mary’s University (NCAA-III).

This summer, the K-Wings will continue to strengthen their roster in preparation for Training Camp in October. The ‘Home Opener’ for Kalamazoo will commence the 2024-25 regular season on Saturday, October 19, against the Cincinnati Cyclones at 7:00 p.m. EST at Wings Event Center.
