The Irwindale Speedway & Event Center, known for hosting NASCAR races, demolition derbies, festivals, and serving as a hotspot for Southern California’s street-legal racing community, is set to close before the year’s end.
“Irwindale has been more than a racetrack — it’s been a home and a hub for racing fans from around the globe,” stated Tim Huddleston, president of the Irwindale Speedway & Event Center, often referred to as ISEC. “We appreciate every moment and memory we’ve created together as a community.”
For 25 years, this speedway has been a central location for automotive enthusiasts. In light of concerns regarding illegal car events, such as street takeovers and racing, city officials and law enforcement have encouraged enthusiasts to turn to ISEC for their legal speed fix.

On Tuesday, Huddleston declared that Irwindale Speedway & Dragstrip is scheduled to host its final event on December 21.
The announcement did not clarify the reasons behind the speedway’s closure after 25 years of racing. Officials from the ISEC were not available for immediate comment.
“Irwindale Speedway has played a vital role in shaping our community’s identity,” remarked Irwindale Mayor Albert F. Ambriz in a statement. “We cherish the memories that have been made here and appreciate the enthusiasm of the fans and racers throughout the years.”
For many years, the facility has been at risk of closure.
In 2017, the Irwindale City Council approved a plan to demolish the racetrack to pave the way for a 700,000-square-foot outlet mall.
However, that plan was temporarily halted without any public announcement, allowing racing activities to continue.
Subsequently, in 2022, the city once more proposed the demolition of the racetrack to make way for industrial and commercial development aimed at enhancing employment opportunities in the city.
In September of that year, after city approval of the industrial complex proposal, the racetrack was acquired by IDS Real Estate Group, a commercial real estate firm operating in California and Washington. City officials indicated that IDS intended to proceed with the demolition of the racetrack and the construction of the industrial site, although Huddleston stated that there was “no imminent threat” to the racetrack.
A representative from the city of Irwindale did not immediately reply to questions regarding the industrial complex proposal or whether the city is reviewing plans for the racetrack land.
“The city is dedicated to ensuring that future developments on the land prioritizes community-oriented projects that benefit Irwindale residents,” stated a spokesperson.
As per the city’s website, there is still an active project aimed at transforming the racetrack area into an industrial and commercial park.
In the meantime, Irwindale Speedway & Dragstrip has an array of events lined up before its closure, including Thursday Night Thunders, Night of Destruction on November 2, and Nitro Revival on November 8 and 9.

The grand finale will be the Irwindale Speedway Farewell Extravaganza on December 21, featuring NASCAR short-track races, the Drift Invitational, and the ARCA Menards Series West race.
