Intentionality.
Catie Griggs emphasized the term in various forms four times during the initial two minutes of a discussion regarding the Orioles’ initiatives to analyze, restructure, and enhance their business operations department. Griggs, who joined Baltimore over the summer as president of business operations, stated that this concept is central to her vision for the organization.
She outlines a purposeful strategy across numerous areas, including improvements to Camden Yards, enhancements in ticket sales, the in-game experience, and the future of the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network. Achieving this vision will require a comprehensive approach, with the organization moving in unison and fostering trust among both new hires and established staff.
“It’s all about intentionality,” Griggs shared during a phone interview. “What actions can we take to more deliberately engage our community, and how can we draw back fans who, for various reasons, haven’t attended recently? How do we ensure that the environment is welcoming for all fans, encouraging those wearing hats and gear to come downtown?”
Winning contributes significantly.
This season marked the Orioles’ return to the playoffs for a second consecutive year, leading to an attendance of over 2 million fans in Baltimore for the first time since 2017. This reflects progress, although the total of 2,281,129 attendees left the team ranked 19th out of 30 in overall attendance.
Nevertheless, winning alone does not guarantee attendance. As Griggs manages the organization’s well-being, she acknowledges that aspects such as pricing, food offerings, and the overall ballpark experience are equally crucial in attracting fans downtown. Once the Orioles finalize a ground lease agreement for Camden Yards with the state, the historic stadium may assume an even more prominent role as a destination.
Here’s that word again.
“It always goes back to that word: intentionality,” Griggs reiterated. “We possess an incredible ballpark. Camden Yards is one of the landmark ballparks — and I would contend one of the iconic sports venues in the U.S. It’s a fantastic starting point, but we also understand that, in certain aspects, it’s somewhat outdated. We’re fortunate to be in a position where we can protect all the remarkable features of Camden Yards while also seeking opportunities to create experiences within the park that resonate with a broader audience.”
The redevelopment process, which will allow the Orioles to utilize up to $600 million in state bonds to revitalize the ballpark, is set to start with minor changes in 2025 before implementing larger renovations in 2026.
The Maryland Stadium Authority approved a $135 million plan on October 1 for the initial series of upgrades, which includes a new video board and sound system. This proposal will be presented in November to Maryland’s Board of Public Works — consisting of Governor Wes Moore, Treasurer Dereck Davis, and Comptroller Brooke Lierman — with the first bond issuance anticipated in December, pending approval.
Griggs confirmed that the new video board is expected to be installed by 2026. “It may seem like a straightforward task to accomplish, but in reality, it can be quite complex,” she explained. The timeline for acquiring and setting up a new video board will take at least a year or more.
“A similar overarching solution for audio enhancements is planned for 2026,” Griggs added. “However, we are exploring potential interim improvements for 2025, so that is still a work in progress. We always strive to enhance the experience for our fans whenever possible.”
While Griggs hinted at some experiential changes for 2025, she did not provide specific details.
She noted one drawback of Camden Yards — even with numerous advantages — is that the concourses are separated from the playing field. Without those sightlines, she mentioned that the business operations department is exploring ways to enhance fan experiences while they wait in concession lines, with plans to implement some solutions by 2025.
As part of the preparation for Grigg’s vision, the organization is on a hiring spree, looking to fill multiple key roles: chief financial officer, chief revenue officer, chief marketing officer, chief human resources officer, senior vice president of strategy and innovation, and general counsel. Additionally, longtime executive Greg Bader has been reassigned to oversee MASN.
Griggs, who started her management career with Major League Soccer’s Atlanta United before transitioning to MLB’s Seattle Mariners, stated that her decision to create these positions stems from her belief in surrounding herself with knowledgeable individuals who can thrive. She pointed to “underinvestment” in certain areas and the need for fresh perspectives as catalysts for these new roles.
However, she is not advocating for change merely for the sake of change.
“We should build upon the legacy knowledge we possess, while also integrating outsider perspectives that encourage us to think differently, enabling us to navigate the best path forward,” Griggs explained. “It’s not solely about our past, but it certainly doesn’t have to be completely new either.”
By assigning Bader to oversee MASN, Griggs mentioned that the network benefits from an executive reporting directly to her, who can facilitate communication with the Washington Nationals. The MASN agreement continues to be a point of contention. This network was established to appease then-owner Peter Angelos when the Montreal Expos relocated to Washington, and the Orioles maintain the majority stake.
Even amidst a “tumultuous” period for regional sports networks, where the financially struggling Diamond Sports Group has proposed to cease broadcasts for 11 MLB teams, Griggs expressed confidence in MASN’s positioning and its ability to “sustain a fruitful working relationship with the Nationals” while continuing to air games for both teams.
When questioned about the potential for a direct-to-consumer streaming option, Griggs acknowledged that “structural challenges currently exist within our setup that we are addressing, taking into account the relationships with distributors and the nature of those contracts.”
MASN became accessible on the streaming service Fubo before the 2024 season commenced. However, for the time being, the network is primarily available through traditional cable packages — and it has been relocated to a more expensive package on Comcast.
Griggs is balancing numerous responsibilities as president of business operations, which is part of the rationale for expanding her team. In line with how the ownership group of David Rubenstein, Michael Arougheti, and others support Griggs in her role, she envisions a collaborative leadership approach to advance the Orioles.
She indicated that the ownership group has established a “strategic North Star” and laid down certain guidelines for the business operations team to adhere to. Nonetheless, neither Griggs nor the owners engage in micromanagement.
“I firmly believe in assembling talented, intelligent individuals and empowering them to excel in their roles,” Griggs asserted.
Ultimately, it all circles back to one principle: intentionality. Griggs emphasized that if they are purposeful in their approach, the Orioles will best address their own needs as well as those of their fans.
