DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Kyle Busch is concealing his disappointment. He’s masking his frustration as he navigates through the NASCAR garage, striving to ensure that no one perceives the difficulties he has faced this season as a two-time Cup Series champion.
“Apparently, I’m a great actor,” he joked.
Busch remains winless over the last 45 races, with his most recent victory dating back to June 4, 2023, at Gateway Park near St. Louis. This mounting loss streak places him in a challenging situation as he approaches tonight’s race at Daytona International Speedway.
In order to secure a playoff spot for the 12th consecutive year, Busch must win one of the two remaining regular-season races — Daytona and Darlington. The last time he missed the postseason was in 2012.
“We could definitely win Daytona,” Busch asserted during a Zoom call on Thursday, referencing his 12th-place finish at the iconic speedway in February, alongside impressive performances at similar tracks like Atlanta and Talladega, and even a fourth-place finish at Michigan last week.
Perhaps he is adding a positive spin to the scenario, considering Busch only has one victory in 38 attempts at the birthplace of NASCAR. Regardless, Busch did not shy away from expressing his dissatisfaction regarding the way his season has transpired.
“It’s tough because when you’ve achieved as much as I have, and you’ve garnered the success and accolades, it’s hard to pick yourself back up again after feeling run over and beaten down,” Busch explained. “But I’ve faced challenges before, though probably never for as long or as intensely as this.”
The 39-year-old Busch noted that the outcomes have not reflected his team’s hard work. He is investing more time in the simulator and has even exchanged a few crew members between the two Richard Childress Racing vehicles, but the results remain disappointing.
“It seems like the harder I try … the worse we perform on the track,” Busch lamented.
Currently, Busch sits 18th in the playoff standings, trailing Bubba Wallace by 93 points and Ross Chastain by 94, who is currently holding onto the last postseason position.
Twelve drivers have secured their spots in the 16-man playoff field due to their victories: Kyle Larson, Denny Hamlin, Christopher Bell, Tyler Reddick, William Byron, Ryan Blaney, Chase Elliott, Brad Keselowski, Austin Cindric, Joey Logano, Daniel Suarez, and Alex Bowman.
Among the other winless competitors vying for the four remaining spots are Martin Truex Jr., Ty Gibbs, Chris Buescher, Chastain, and Wallace.
<p“Daytona and Darlington are both strong tracks for us,” Wallace stated. “We just need to maintain our momentum.”
Others are feeling the urgency. The always-chaotic Daytona has yielded a number of unexpected winners in recent years — Buescher and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. in 2023, Austin Dillon and Cindric in 2022, Michael McDowell in 2021, Justin Haley in 2019, and Erik Jones in 2018.
“It seems like we all lose our minds at the end of races (at Daytona) and just keep the gas pedal down until we get to the front,” Stenhouse remarked.
Byron added: “As we all know, luck plays a significant role.”
Consequently, no one should be dismissed from contention tonight, including Busch, whose only victory at Daytona was in 2008.
“The reality is, the better you perform and the more consistently you run, the more confidence you gain as you head into every weekend, knowing you can achieve it again,” he observed.
Busch has far more at stake than simply his playoff streak. He also holds the NASCAR record for the most consecutive years with at least one victory, a streak that began in 2005.
He surpassed Hall of Famer Richard Petty’s previous record of 18 straight years, established between 1960 and 1977. Since drivers eliminated from the playoffs continue to compete in the 10 postseason races, Busch has the opportunity to extend that record.
“I aim to keep it going as long as possible,” Busch said. “You want to set that yearly mark as high as you can, making it challenging for anyone to surpass. Just look at how long Richard Petty’s record stood before I achieved it.”

NASCAR has mandated the installation of a right-side, rear-window air deflector at Daytona, following Corey LaJoie’s unusual flip on Monday at Michigan International Speedway.
LaJoie’s No. 7 Chevrolet rotated sideways, lifted off the ground without colliding with another vehicle, and then landed upside down, sliding hundreds of feet before rolling over upon hitting the infield grass.
“If they want to dub it the ‘LaJoie fin,’ I’ll gladly embrace an innovation for the car,” LaJoie remarked. “I’ve heard it can increase liftoff speed by 40 mph, so it’s bound to alter how the car handles and how side-drafting is affected.”
Busch mentioned that drivers had experimented with the “shark fin” deflector years earlier, and he even proposed using it consistently, though “I never heard anything further” from NASCAR.
“If this serves as a tool to keep the cars grounded when they turn sideways at high speeds, I’m completely on board,” he said. “I also believe it could be beneficial for regular weekly races as well.”

Busch suggested that NASCAR should consider starting summer races earlier, especially at tracks lacking lighting, like Michigan International Speedway, to accommodate more time for potential rain delays.
“When you’re in the summer at venues without lights, it’s essential to begin earlier to maximize what can be accomplished for the fans present,” Busch stated. “(Fans) invest their time, money, and weekends to attend, which helps ensure that your show appears better on television with a full grandstand.”
“We owe it to those individuals.”
