Denny Hamlin experienced an early crash during the Daytona race on August 24, ultimately finishing in 38th place. This early departure allowed the Joe Gibbs Racing driver to watch the rest of the race from his bus, witnessing Harrison Burton fend off Kyle Busch in the final lap to secure his first NASCAR Cup Series victory and earn a spot in the playoffs.
On his August 25 “Actions Detrimental” podcast, the three-time Daytona 500 champion reflected on those concluding moments and shared his thoughts about NBC’s new play-by-play commentator Leigh Diffey and his commentary from the broadcast booth.
“Absolutely fantastic! Oh my gosh,” praised Hamlin. “Can we sign him up for all 36 races? Can we make that executive decision at NBC or NASCAR to say, ‘Hey, non-exclusive — let him call every race’?”
“He’s simply amazing. He knows how to capture the moment. There’s something about the great ones; they can adjust their voice to match the moment. They alter their tone and change the pace when calling a race, right? That’s why he was chosen to call the 100 meters at the Olympics, right?”

Because that’s what he does and what he’s truly exceptional at.
“He’s an incredible addition. I believe, in general, NBC’s production, like the 3D car they display when something goes awry, has the CAD illustrating all the components. NBC is absolutely excelling right now.”
After another podcast member referenced Diffey’s commentary during that final lap, Hamlin recalled another point.
“And you know what was also fantastic? They allowed him to take center stage,” he remarked. “They gave him the opportunity to shine. Steve (Letarte) and Jeff (Burton) — they didn’t interrupt him. They recognized he was the play-by-play announcer, letting him call it as it happened, right? Then we would respond to what we just witnessed after the checkered flag. That’s a bit of the chaos you experience I feel at Fox. Everyone is keen to announce the last lap, and it can get a tad disorderly at times.”
Denny Hamlin Has Been Vocal About Fox’s Announcing
Denny Hamlin critiquing Fox’s broadcast is not a new occurrence. He has done so several times in the past. In June 2023, the JGR driver addressed the topic on his podcast while talking about the coverage of the F1 race in Monaco. He also notably mentioned Diffey.
“I must absolutely commend the announcers,” Hamlin expressed. “It’s incredible how they make you feel, oh my goodness, this is astonishing what Max Verstappen accomplished in the final sector during qualifying. I mean, they’re shouting into the mic saying, ‘I can’t believe what just occurred!’
“And I’m thinking, wow, I guess this is — this is a significant moment. I ought to pay attention to it. It’s just wild how you contrast that with the monotone we experience (in NASCAR), right? It’s just that da-da-da-da-da-da. Leigh Diffey excels at his craft. It’s absolutely fantastic how he calls IndyCar races.”
Hamlin Has Also Critiqued Fox Production
In addition to the final lap at Daytona, Ham

Lin discussed the overall production quality at NBC, highlighting that it significantly surpasses what is broadcasted during the initial half of the season on Fox. He also criticized Fox in April 2023 due to the inferior quality of their production.
“I believe that fans, particularly on social media, are very, very critical of Fox,” Hamlin acknowledged. “Some of that criticism is justified, but I think they often focus on minor issues that could be improved upon.
“For instance, when I watched the Bristol dirt race last week, the announcers discussed a side-by-side battle, yet the camera wasn’t capturing it. So, viewers were left wondering — what are they referring to? I want to see this battle.
“Moreover, I noticed that when some action began to heat up in a side-by-side battle, the camera would cut away to a view of 12th place. You could see the second-place driver right on the bumper of the leader, ready to make a move, but they switched to a side-by-side view for 12th place. It’s frustrating; we should focus on the action that’s likely to determine the race leader. From a production perspective, I believe we can certainly enhance this.”
Hamlin stated that NBC has already made those enhancements, and following the Daytona race, he identified one specific change he favored and wishes to see implemented in future broadcasts.
