Dave Dombrowski has steered five teams to the World Series: the 1997 Marlins, the 2006 and 2012 Tigers, the 2018 Red Sox, and the 2022 Phillies.
As the Phillies prepare for the postseason, commencing with Game 1 of the NLDS on Saturday at Citizens Bank Park, the president of baseball operations held a 25-minute press conference in the dugout prior to Tuesday’s practice.
The following comments have been condensed for brevity and clarity.
Q. Is there a particular area of your team’s performance as the season winds down that has you concerned?
A. “Typically, after the All-Star break, my main concern revolves around our offense getting back into rhythm. Players have days off, and we follow a routine.
“During the All-Star break, we don’t have control over the players, which is a different scenario. Currently, we’re in a position to utilize high-level, high-velocity machines for practice, including curveball machines. We’re also planning to conduct batting practice. My biggest worry remains the offense, as days off can lead to some apprehension.”
Q. If five days off pose challenges for hitters, can they be beneficial for pitchers as well?
A. “Yes, I believe so. The pitching staff has discussed this aspect extensively among themselves. That’s why this week is crucial—to prepare them without allowing too much downtime.
“Zack (Wheeler) typically prefers to pitch every five to six days, but he’ll be going on his seventh day now. However, he has strategies to stay sharp. The postseason generally elevates your performance in that aspect; it enhances your readiness. He may also throw an additional light side session during the week.
“For (Cristopher) Sanchez and (Aaron) Nola, it will be quite a while since they last pitched, but they’ll throw this week, as will (Ranger) Suarez. We’ll manage the others to ensure they remain ready. One advantage will be for the bullpen, as they will be fresh. Having extra rest during this time is beneficial. While we haven’t overextended them, everyone can use some downtime at this stage of the year, and they’ll still get sufficient throwing time.”
Q. This marks your third consecutive year in the playoffs. Do you sense any urgency, knowing these opportunities are limited?
A. “Not really. Firstly, I don’t feel that our window is closing. I keep hearing that notion; however, a window may close with the current roster, but that doesn’t signify an overall closure.
“We have promising young talents on the rise that we’re excited about. Additionally, our ownership continues to support us with payroll expenditures. Ideally, as some players age and their skills begin to decline—this varies among players—you need to ensure young talents are ready to step in. We truly believe we have some outstanding prospects coming up.
“Some of these players are already here, such as (Bryson) Stott, (Alec) Bohm, (Brandon) Marsh, and (Cristopher) Sanchez, who we expect to be around for a while, along with (Orion) Kerkering and (Johan) Rojas. We have another promising group behind them as well.
“Therefore, I don’t perceive that the Phillies’ window is closing, but there are always limitations concerning the current team we have
In the last two years, how does it feel coming into this season as the division winner with a bye?
A. “I don’t believe our team will ease off the gas at all. These players are determined to succeed, understanding that our goal is to secure a world championship. Many of them share that belief, especially since some have yet to win a title. If anything, we are positioned to improve our chances as a team.”
Q. How challenging is it to prepare without knowing whether you will face the Brewers or Mets?
A. “Naturally, we are ready for anyone. Our advance scouts have been diligently monitoring all the teams in the National League for quite some time. One advantage for us, at least for the initial round, is our recent encounters with the Mets; we’ve faced them seven times over the last few weeks. We also just played the Brewers. Plus, if the Braves advance to the NLCS, we’ve already played them multiple times as well.
The only teams we haven’t faced much lately are the Padres and possibly the Dodgers. However, we have thoroughly scouted those teams. We’ll be ready regardless of who we encounter.”
Q. How tough is it knowing that everything you’ve accomplished could end due to a simple mistake, like a bad hop or pitch, or any unforeseen circumstance?
A. “Unfortunately, that’s just the nature of the sport. You prepare and do everything within your power. I am completely confident that our players will be as ready as they can be in terms of fundamentals, pitching, and hitting. However, you never know what obstacles you may face. That’s just how the game unfolds.
“I’ve experienced many postseasons. Sometimes, you win games that seem impossible to take. Other times, you feel confident about a match-up and end up losing.
“For instance, during the 1997 World Series between the Cleveland Indians and the Florida Marlins, we lost two games where Kevin Brown, the best pitcher in the National League that year, faced off against Chad Ogea, our fourth or fifth starter. We lost both games at home, yet we still won the World Series. It’s unpredictable.
“It’s unsettling; you feel your stomach tense because a single bloop hit can cost you everything. That unpredictability adds to the excitement of the postseason for fans.
“Take last year for example. I never anticipated that we would lose when we returned home for Games 6 and 7 of the NLCS. I believed we would win. Yet, Arizona managed to defeat us, and they rightfully earned that victory.”
Q. Do those losses stay with you?
A. “They will stay with me for the rest of my life.”
