Detroit — Danny DeKeyser, a former defenseman for the Red Wings, has filed a lawsuit against HCC Life Insurance Company seeking $680,000 in disability payments.
The lawsuit, consisting of 15 pages and submitted on Monday to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, alleges that there has been “a breach of the terms of a professional hockey player’s occupation-specific and sport disability insurance contract.”
According to the lawsuit, “The aim of this case is to compel Defendant HCC Life Insurance Company to provide long-term disability benefits at the promised levels and amounts, along with an accounting and compensation for attorney fees and costs incurred due to Defendant’s noncompliance.”
At 34 years old and hailing from Macomb Township, DeKeyser joined the Red Wings in 2013 and played until the end of the 2021-22 season.
Following his six-year contract worth million that he signed in 2016, DeKeyser (Warren De La Salle/Western Michigan) began experiencing discomfort in his left foot as well as lower back pain radiating down his leg starting in October 2019.
Later that year, he sought treatment from an orthopedic surgeon and underwent back surgery in December 2019. This operation resulted in him missing out on the remainder of the 2019-2020 season.
Ongoing back issues led him to play only 47 games during one season followed by just 59 games in another before Detroit opted not to re-sign him when his contract expired.
DeKeyser tried returning to professional hockey in fall 2022; however, due to “functional restrictions and limitations stemming from his lower back injuries alongside a deteriorating medical condition,” he was incapable of making a comeback as stated by the lawsuit.
Currently residing in Macomb County, DeKeyser works as a real estate agent.
