Mboko quickly established her dominance, securing two breaks to win the first five games. After trailing 3-1 in the second set, she rallied to win five of the next six games and close out the match.
“I was very excited to be chosen to be on the Billie Jean king Cup team in Japan,” Mboko said. “I had already represented Canada at the Billie jean King Cup junior, but it’s amazing to be here for the professional part of the cup. And to get my first win in front of the many Canadian fans is even better. They make me feel at home here, and I’m realy happy and grateful.”
Marina Stakusic (No. 128) followed with a resilient performance, defeating Anca Todoni (No. 88) 6-3, 6-4 to secure Canada’s overall victory. Stakusic demonstrated composure by saving four break points in the fourth game of the first set. She than broke serve in the ninth game, allowing her to serve for the set.
“I feel very relieved to have managed to get through it,” Stakusic said. “[Anca Todoni] was an extremely arduous opponent.I think we played a very high-quality match, especially in the first set.So I’m really relieved to have won this one.”
Marino and Cross Seal the Sweep in Doubles
Rebecca Marino and Kayla Cross completed the clean sweep with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Georgia Andreea Craciun and Mara Gae in the doubles match.
