EDMONTON — Connor McDavid firmly believes there is no question about who should serve as the captain of Canada for the upcoming 2025 4 Nations Face-Off.
“It should be Sid. It should definitely be Sid; that’s not even debatable,” remarked the Edmonton Oilers center regarding Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby on Thursday. “It’s just how it ought to be. He’s Sidney Crosby, with a wealth of experience, and he’s the one. I didn’t even have to think about it much; it’s just an obvious choice.”
The 4 Nations Face-Off, featuring NHL players from Canada, the United States, Sweden, and Finland, will run from February 12 to February 20 at Montreal’s Bell Centre and Boston’s TD Garden. Tickets for the Montreal games will go on sale on Tuesday, followed by tickets for the Boston games on Wednesday at Ticketmaster.com.
“I appreciate that,” Crosby stated on Thursday. “He’s acknowledging my experience. He’s a fantastic leader and has contributed immensely to our team here and to Canada as well. Anytime you’re chosen to wear a letter, whether it’s a ‘C’ or an ‘A’, and represent Team Canada, it’s a significant honor, regardless. I truly appreciate it.”
More than three months ahead of that event, McDavid and Crosby are set to meet for the 14th time when the Penguins (3-4-1) take on the Oilers (2-4-1) at Rogers Place on Friday (9 p.m. ET; TVAS, SN1, SN-PIT).
<p“Crosby hasn’t changed at all. Year after year, he continues to impress,” McDavid commented about Crosby. “He’s someone I admired growing up and still hold in high regard today.”
Crosby, picked first overall by Pittsburgh in the 2005 NHL Draft, is now in his 20th NHL season. The 37-year-old has recorded seven points (one goal, six assists) over eight games.
McDavid, selected first overall by Edmonton in the 2015 NHL Draft, is currently in his 10th NHL season. The 27-year-old has eight points (three goals, five assists) in seven games.
“I hope to reach 37 like he has,” McDavid said. “And I hope to maintain a similar level of play.”
In 13 games against Crosby, McDavid has amassed 27 points (nine goals, 18 assists) with a plus-15 rating, and the Oilers hold a record of 7-3-3. Crosby, in contrast, has seven points (three goals, four assists) with a minus-12 rating, while the Penguins are at 6-6-1.
Crosby and the Penguins initially defeated McDavid and the Oilers in their first six meetings, but Edmonton has emerged victorious in the last seven confrontations.
Following practice in Edmonton on Thursday, Crosby discussed the Oilers’ recent success against the Penguins.
“They have a lot of speed and are very opportunistic,” Crosby explained. “Connor and Leon [Draisaitl] are incredibly tough competitors, particularly due to their speed. One small mistake, being out of position, can easily lead to a goal against. They are that dangerous. It challenges your discipline, structure, and overall competitive level. You must find ways to maintain possession and minimize their scoring chances.”
This matchup marks the first of two games they will play against each other this season, with the Oilers set to visit the Penguins on January 9. The number of additional games between them beyond that remains uncertain.
Crosby recently signed a two-year, $17.4 million contract with the Penguins, which carries an average annual value of $8.7 million, effective next season as of September 16.
“He shows no signs of slowing down,” said McDavid. “Competing against Sid, [Evgeni] Malkin, [Kris] Letang, and all those exceptional players is always special.”
McDavid indicated that facing Crosby this time will not differ significantly, even though they are expected to be teammates during the 4 Nations Face-Off.
“We still have that drive to win; he wants to win tomorrow just as much as I do, and that competitive spirit will be present,” McDavid noted. “But come February, we will be teammates, and that will be an enjoyable experience, too.”
McDavid and Crosby were among the first six players named to Canada’s roster for the 4 Nations Face-Off, joining center Nathan MacKinnon and defenseman Cale Makar of the Colorado Avalanche, as well as forwards Brayden Point of the Tampa Bay Lightning and Brad Marchand of the Boston Bruins.
Crosby expressed enthusiasm about playing alongside McDavid instead of against him.
“It’ll be much better, that’s for sure,” Crosby said. “I’ve trained with him, and witnessing firsthand how quickly he performs, along with his exceptional skill, is incredible. Everything he does has a high pace to it, and he makes difficult skills appear effortless. The fact that he continues to improve is even more impressive.”
This tournament will mark the first time NHL players compete in a best-on-best format since the 2016 World Cup of Hockey. McDavid played for Team North America, composed of players 23 and under, while Crosby played for Canada, which won the tournament.
“I’m eagerly anticipating the Four Nations, both to play with Sid and alongside many other great players: Nate, Makar, and numerous others,” said McDavid. “I’m really excited about that event. All four teams will be extremely competitive, and it’s anyone’s tournament to win.”
The NHL is set to take part in the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympics. McDavid has yet to represent Canada at the Olympics, while Crosby has won gold medals at Vancouver in 2010 and Sochi in 2014.
“I see [Four Nations] as a precursor to what’s ahead,” McDavid expressed. “It’s an opportunity for us to ease back into international competition with the Olympics following next year. I think it’s important for the four countries to put on a remarkable show and continue to promote the game, showcasing the future of international play.”
