CINCINNATI (WXIX) – According to a report by the Sports Business Journal, Cincinnati is among the cities being considered to host NASCAR’s annual street race.
The event, known as The Grant Park 165, has taken place in Chicago for the past two years.
Racing runs deep in the culture of Cincinnati, Southwest Ohio, and the Tri-State area. The Kentucky Motor Speedway held NASCAR events for several years, and both dirt tracks and drag strips remain popular attractions in the region.
Dave Lehman, a third-generation racer with Lightning Chassis, has raced dirt track cars and has competed at Daytona.
Lehman noted that dirt racing has gained popularity over time, with some tracks drawing crowds of 20,000 to 30,000 fans. He believes NASCAR’s interest in relocating the street race to Cincinnati highlights the strength of the local racing community.
“Within a 45-minute to an hour radius, there are three race tracks,” said Lehman. “Extend that to an hour and a half, and you’ll likely find four to five more. Racing is thriving in our region, so it’s encouraging that NASCAR is considering our city. I believe it will yield positive results.”
Brian Gray, another racer for Lightning Chassis, expressed that Cincinnati’s street layout would be conducive for a street racing event.
“For example, Mehring Way is a great spot around the stadiums,” Gray said. “It’s spacious and has several tight sections throughout the city.”
Gray also mentioned that incorporating the bridges over the Ohio River would add a unique element to the event.
However, Lehman emphasized that some surface and other improvements would be necessary to facilitate stock car racing on city streets.
“That would likely be a significant part of the equation,” Lehman stated. “Safety is a critical issue when cars are reaching speeds of 170 mph, or whatever the case may be.”
Lehman remarked that it all hinges on effective planning. He believes that regardless of whether the city secures the race, the motorsports community will continue to thrive.
