The newly appointed Nets coach Jordi Fernandez identifies scoring as Cam Thomas’ exceptional ability.
He aims to enhance this ability as the promising guard approaches a crucial season in his career.
“Development is the priority. This applies not only to the younger players but also to the veterans. Everyone must improve; a strategy is essential,” Fernandez remarked. “In my discussions with Cam, the focus is on ‘How can I assist you in becoming a more efficient scorer?’ Analyzing his statistics reveals that he is most efficient when he minimizes his dribbles. His effectiveness ranks among the best in the NBA, which is quite remarkable.

“His ability to score is exceptional, and our focus should be on assisting him in achieving that efficiently. The same applies to his playmaking, as he draws significant defensive scrutiny. Teams will likely attempt to double-team him, so we need to develop his capacity to pass and create additional assists. It’s my responsibility, along with the coaching staff, to support him, and we are confident he can progress to the next level.”
Thomas led the team with an impressive average of 22.5 points last season, rising to 28.0 points across his last 10 appearances.
With Mikal Bridges no longer on the roster and the Nets in a rebuilding phase, Thomas is expected to attract even more defensive focus and must avoid the temptation to take contested shots.
Fernandez’s observation is indeed valid.
Thomas boasts an effective field goal percentage of .658 when shooting without dribbling. His percentage is a commendable .508 with one dribble and .483 with two.
However, when he dribbles between three to six times, this figure dramatically decreases to .438.

This aspect, along with both defensive skills and playmaking, will be emphasized during the camp and preseason.
Cam Thomas is in line for a rookie contract extension, joining Day’Ron Sharpe and new addition Ziaire Williams, who has made a positive impression during summer workouts.
