White Sox to Honor Mark Buehrle With Statue
The Chicago White Sox will unveil a statue of former All-Star left-hander Mark buehrle outside Rate Field on July 11, the team announced.
The ceremony coincides with the 20th anniversary reunion of the 2005 World Series championship team, on which Buehrle pitched. His number 56 was retired by the team in 2017.
“retiring my number is an astonishing honor, but then to put a statue up, it’s something that’s going to be of me out there forever,” Buehrle said. He famously quipped that he hoped the statue would be “something cool, maybe me with a horse.”
Buehrle, 45, pitched for the White Sox for the first 12 years of his 16-year career. He won 161 of his 214 career games with Chicago and finished fifth in the American League Cy Young Award voting in 2005. He had a career 3.81 ERA and 14 straight seasons of throwing 200 or more innings.
The left-hander received 11.4% of the Hall of Fame vote in his fifth year of eligibility, falling short of the 75% needed for induction. Buehrle remains on the ballot
He said he doesn’t dwell on his Hall of Fame chances, adding: “I can’t tell you exactly what my numbers are compared to [Andy] Pettitte, compared to [CC] Sabathia, but I know there’s some guys that are not in the Hall of Fame that have better numbers than I do. Are you going off innings? You going off strikeouts? You going off of WAR? There’s so much stuff you can go off of. I’m literally just honored to be on the ballot for this many years.”
Buehrle revealed that when informed about the statue last summer by owner Jerry Reinsdorf, his first question was about a potential speech. Known for his brevity, he plans to keep any remarks “short.”
