Brentford’s remarkable achievement of scoring three opening-minute goals in as many matches was not sufficient to secure a victory against West Ham, as Tomas Soucek’s equalizer ensured a 1-1 draw for the Hammers.
Bryan Mbeumo’s stunning volley, netted just 41 seconds into the game, followed his earlier goals at Tottenham after 22 seconds and Yoane Wissa’s strike at Manchester City a week prior. Mbeumo’s acrobatic effort was the standout moment as he hooked the ball home beautifully.
West Ham’s start was yet again disastrous, coming off a midweek defeat in which they conceded five goals to Liverpool and a 3-0 loss to Chelsea the previous weekend.
“Of course, there’s strategy involved,” said Brentford manager Thomas Frank. “We have a kick-off strategy that we adjust from match to match.
“We practice it, and as part of our philosophy, we aim to maintain that intensity, getting on the front foot and being positive. We strive to deliver a cross, chase the second ball, and take shots. That’s exactly what we accomplished.”
Despite the shaky start, West Ham showed improvement, leading Julen Lopetegui to send his players back out early for the second half, making two tactical changes at half-time.
Nine minutes after the break, three of his starters connected to level the score. Soucek and Jarrod Bowen worked together to set up Michail Antonio, whose mishit shot turned out to be the perfect assist, allowing Soucek to tap in from close range.
While West Ham struggled to climb ahead, they managed to maintain their unbeaten record away from home, delivering a second-half performance that, while lacking in quality, exhibited enough determination to stave off mounting pressure on Lopetegui’s team.
Frank: Mbeumo may move on to better things
Brentford head coach Thomas Frank:
“Bryan Mbeumo is currently performing exceptionally well. He’s extremely talented.
“I firmly believe that one day, Bryan will be part of a larger club. If I were at a bigger club, he would definitely be a player I’d want to sign.”
Last year, missing Ivan [Toney] for four months was a significant setback for us; his absence felt sudden due to the importance he holds as a key player.
“This season, he has added another dimension to his game. Achieving five goals in six matches is remarkable, and he continues to create chances and work tirelessly for the team.”
“He is really content here; while some players might eventually leave, many are happy because we foster a top-tier environment.”
Brilliant Mbeumo is handling the burden of the Brentford attack
Sky Sports’ Ron Walker:
“Logically, Brentford should face challenges after the departures of both Ivan Toney and his replacement, Igor Thiago, along with Yoane Wissa. Yet, Bryan Mbeumo shoulders the entire offensive load for the Bees.
“Kevin Schade is the nearest alternative to a recognized striker, but Mbeumo is excelling as the focal point of the attack.
“Thomas Frank is one of the Premier League’s most enthusiastic supporters, and he genuinely meant it when he stated that Mbeumo’s absence for four months last season was a bigger loss to the team than losing Ivan Toney — at that point, he was tracking for a potential 15-goal season.
“This year, he just might achieve that. Although five goals in six games is a pace that may not be sustainable, he has improved notably as a finisher since Brentford’s promotion.
“During his first season in the Premier League, he scored less than half of the goals suggested by his expected goals (xG) metric — this season, his performance exceeds that metric by more than double based on the small sample size.”
