As we wrap up our offseason mailbag, the Lakers have made their significant move of the summer by…signing a two-way player. I wish this were a joke, but it’s true. Understandably, there were numerous inquiries about Koloko, along with other pertinent topics.
Let’s go ahead and delve into this week’s questions.
To start, we must acknowledge the caveat of “if he’s cleared by the NBA,” which has yet to happen. Assuming that he is, what role will he have on the team this season?
Ultimately, being a two-way player inherently defines his role. It’s fair to say that health issues contributed to this classification, but it remains a reality. He also just missed an entire season of competitive play.
All this is to suggest tempering expectations. I believe he could receive some chances, particularly early in the season while Christian Wood is sidelined. This signing seems like a smart low-risk move for the Lakers.
That said, I am not entering this season with high anticipations for him. If he ends up playing a meaningful role, I’ll be pleasantly surprised.
It’s quite challenging to determine the positions players are occupying in the modern NBA. For instance, when LeBron James, Rui Hachimura, and Anthony Davis share the court, who assumes the role of the 3, LeBron or Rui?
Moreover, I anticipate that LeBron, along with JJ Redick and the Lakers, will be strategic in deciding when to deploy LeBron with AD and another big man. There’s ample evidence that he wouldn’t want to match up against elite small forwards on a random December night, at least not for prolonged stretches.
This will rely heavily on matchups; however, that assumes Koloko, Wood, or Jaxson Hayes play significant minutes alongside AD this season. Early on, that doesn’t seem likely to be a common scenario.
That’s definitely an intriguing scenario. Examining next season’s roster and salary cap, here’s who I would protect in a hypothetical expansion draft held, let’s say, the day before the 2025 NBA Draft.
- LeBron James
- Anthony Davis
- Rui Hachimura
- Austin Reaves
- Gabe Vincent
- Jarred Vanderbilt
- Max Christie
- Dalton Knecht
Honestly, the only difficult choice was deciding between protecting Gabe Vincent or Jalen Hood-Schifino. If Vincent has another underwhelming season, I could see the Lakers opting to leave him protected in search of some cap relief.
The players left unprotected would then be JHS, Maxwell Lewis, and Bronny James. Should the Lakers lose any of them, I wouldn’t be too concerned.
I hope you all enjoyed our summer coverage of the Sparks. I was eager for the staff and the site to invest in this area this season, and I’m pleased with how it turned out.
I truly believe that acquiring Paige Bueckers instantly elevates the Sparks into playoff contention. The team has numerous solid pieces but lacks one crucial element: a point guard. I believe they have quality backup guards in Aari McDonald and Lexie Brown to support, but they desperately need someone to orchestrate the offense.
Yueru had a decent season with the Sparks, unexpectedly stepping up during Cameron Brink’s injury. While I think she did enough to earn another opportunity in the league next season, it wouldn’t shock me if it isn’t with the Sparks.
I’m not a legal expert, but I think Hamby will find it challenging to prove her case without recordings. She might win the public’s favor, but I’d be surprised if she prevailed in a court of law.
I’ll withhold my thoughts on a breakout player until we see the roster ahead of training camp.
For me, this comes down to the middle two choices. Seven-foot Kobe would essentially be Kevin Durant equipped with Kobe’s skill set and work ethic, which is a truly terrifying thought.
Nonetheless, my answer is Magic Johnson paired with Steph Curry’s shooting range. This would be a fusion of the two greatest point guards ever, each possessing extraordinary skills in NBA history—definitely the best player.
We are nearing the end of the offseason. When we post the next mailbag, the Lakers will have begun their training camp.
