Arsenal advanced to the Women’s Champions League group stages with a convincing 4-1 aggregate victory over Hacken, turning around a first-leg deficit.
After falling 1-0 in the first leg held in Sweden, Jonas Eidevall’s team flipped the match in the second half, thanks to goals from Lia Walti and a debut goal from summer signing Mariona Caldentey.
Around the midway point of the first half, Walti unleashed a powerful long-range shot that was tipped onto the bar by Hacken’s goalkeeper Jennifer Falk, only for the ball to rebound off her back and into the net.
Just five minutes before the break, a fast break initiated by Alessia Russo and Beth Mead saw the ball land with Caldentey at the back post, who managed to score with a deflected shot that rolled over the line.
Arsenal then asserted their dominance in the match with a brilliant goal from Mead, who skillfully flicked the ball past a Hacken defender before smashing a volley into the far corner shortly after halftime.
With just over ten minutes remaining, three Arsenal substitutes linked up as Kyra Cooney-Cross played a pass to Caitlin Foord on the left side of the box, allowing the Australian to set up Frida Maanum, who completed the scoring with a well-placed first-time finish.
The Gunners can thank goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger for several crucial second-half saves, including a standout stop against Hacken striker Clarissa Larisey, ensuring their lead remained intact. Consequently, Arsenal comfortably qualified for the Champions League group stage draw alongside Chelsea, Manchester City, and Celtic on Friday.
Did Arsenal have a flawless night?
Arsenal winger Beth Mead speaking to Sky Sports News:
“I wouldn’t characterize it as perfect; there are still numerous aspects in which we can improve. However, compared to last week, we were sharper, more proficient on the ball, effective in switching the play, and we converted chances better than before. it was a good performance.
“As a team, we always believe we’ll create opportunities. Once again this weekend, we had several chances but failed to capitalize. In the first half today, I missed a header that I would usually expect to score. Still, we created many chances and successfully put them away. That was the significant difference across both matches.
