NEW YORK — For the first time in five years, Patrick Kane is starting an NHL season in good health.
He experiences a noticeable difference both physically and mentally every day. Next on his agenda is to demonstrate to the hockey world his capabilities following a full offseason of training and a complete training camp.
Kane, who will celebrate his 36th birthday on Nov. 19, has recorded one assist across the first three games with the Detroit Red Wings. The Red Wings (1-2-0) are set to face the New York Rangers (2-0-1) at Little Caesars Arena on Thursday (7:30 p.m. ET; ESPN+, HULU).
“Training camp has tough days that are challenging on the body, but now it’s not difficult due to injury,” Kane remarked before the Red Wings suffered a 4-1 defeat against the Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Monday. “That’s the enjoyable aspect—being free of pain. It’s a significant part of my current state.”
Kane underwent hip resurfacing surgery on June 1, 2023, dedicating the subsequent six months to rehabilitation before signing a one-year contract with the Red Wings on Nov. 8. He made his debut on Dec. 7.
In his pain-free 50-game stint, he scored 20 goals and tallied 27 assists. He re-signed with Detroit on June 30, training pain-free and entering the regular season feeling better than he has in years.
“Not having to spend the entire summer rehabbing allowed me to train like an athlete, which was probably the most significant factor for me during the offseason,” Kane explained.
The last time he enjoyed an offseason without pain was in 2019. The following season, he amassed 84 points (33 goals, 51 assists) in 70 games with the Chicago Blackhawks.
The Blackhawks participated in the Edmonton bubble for the postseason after the League resumed from its COVID-19 hiatus, winning a series for the first time since claiming the Stanley Cup in 2015. However, it was during this period that he began to feel discomfort in his right hip.
He persisted, believing he could manage the pain and play through it, despite not being able to perform as he once did with the Blackhawks—a player recognized as one of the NHL’s 100 Greatest Players in 2017. Nevertheless, he still produced 66 points (15 goals, 51 assists) in the 2020-21 season and achieved 92 points (26 goals, 66 assists) in 78 games during the 2021-22 campaign.
Set to become an unrestricted free agent, Kane was traded to the New York Rangers on Feb. 28, 2023, and contributed six points (one goal, five assists) in a first-round playoff loss to the New Jersey Devils. It was then he realized he was no longer the player he aspired to be when the pain first began.
Surgery became his only viable option to not only continue his playing career but also to live a normal life thereafter.
Kane thus became the third NHL player to successfully undergo hip resurfacing surgery and return to the ice, following Nicklas Backstrom of the Washington Capitals in 2022 and Ed Jovanovski of the Florida Panthers in 2014.
This procedure has extended his career and transformed his life.
“There are definitely days when I need to be cautious and ensure everything feels right, but the joint isn’t an issue anymore—that’s the vital point,” Kane noted. “You can manage soreness and tightness around the area, but when your joint suffers from arthritis, there’s little you can do apart from seeking temporary relief. Now that the joint issue has been resolved, that’s the most important change.”
Instead, Kane’s challenge lay in managing the rigors of training camp, enduring the lengthy on-ice sessions as he embarks on his 18th NHL season.
“We joke about it, but he told me this is the hardest camp he’s ever faced,” remarked Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde. “That’s a testament to why he’s a professional and the caliber of Hall of Fame player he is. He said, ‘I needed it.’ I believe that’s a strong example for all our younger players.”
Kane mentioned that he hadn’t skated at the intensity he did during training camp in quite some time, not even during the extensive on-ice sessions he completed after surgery prior to signing with the Red Wings last season.
“You skate, but not at that volume and intensity for such prolonged periods,” he stated. “It was beneficial to push myself and gauge where I currently stand. At that point, it’s a matter of mind over matter. I found it encouraging since I missed training camp last year. I enjoyed being with the team and having a legitimate training camp.”
This time, he appreciated not merely jumping back into the fray. The previous two seasons felt rushed to him, first when he was traded to the Rangers and again last season with his signing in Detroit.
Forward Alex DeBrincat, who shared the ice with Kane in Chicago from 2017 to 2022, has noticed a significant difference in his longtime teammate due to the recent training camp.
“Last year, when he joined our team, he had maybe just a week with us before he appeared, and he looked good then. But the summer of training has made him even more comfortable and gives him a chance to refine his skills,” DeBrincat said. “He seems very at ease, and we hope to get something going soon.”
Kane, DeBrincat, and Dylan Larkin, forming Detroit’s top line, have already combined for seven points (four goals, three assists) in the first three games as the Red Wings strive to return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since the 2015-16 season.
“He’s been fantastic thus far, but his presence in the locker room holds significant value for our team,” Larkin, the Red Wings captain, stated. ”As a player born in America, you grew up idolizing him, and now he has chosen to play with us. It’s been a tremendous fit. He seeks more and aims to be an impactful player.”
