“Perhaps this time, it’s better not to dwell on it and simply give my best effort, and hopefully, the results will follow.”
Kakko, who registered an 18-22-40 season in 2022-23, along with linemate Filip Chytil and Will Cuylle, participated in Sunday’s preseason opener, where Chytil tallied a goal and an assist.
Rangers coach Peter Laviolette opted to hold out his top two lines from traveling, but he plans to dress more regulars for Tuesday’s preseason game against the Islanders at the Garden.
“I played with Will last year as well. I know what he brings to the ice, and I’ve spent considerable time with Fil,” Kakko stated, having spent most of the summer in Finland. “It’s a new season, and we’ve only had a few practices together, but we all understand our capabilities and I believe we can be an effective line.”

Though Lafreniere’s statistics could benefit from increased time on the power play, breaking into the first unit—which includes Zibanejad, Trocheck, Kreider, Panarin, and defenseman Adam Fox—has proven challenging. Last year, Lafreniere scored 26 of his 28 goals at even strength.
“I wouldn’t mind it. Every player appreciates the opportunity for power-play time, but that’s not my main focus. I simply want to compete and contribute,” Lafreniere explained. “Regardless of the situation, I strive to play well whenever I step onto the ice and will do whatever it takes to help the team succeed.”
