After several seasons with the San Jose Sharks, Alexander Barabanov made the decision to leave the NHL and return to his home country of Russia to play in the KHL. Over the course of his NHL career, Barabanov participated in 206 games and tallied more than 100 points. However, he felt the free-agent offers he received this offseason did not reflect his worth.
The 2023-24 season proved challenging for Barabanov, who averaged nearly 16 minutes of ice time per game. A series of injuries limited him to just 46 games, while the Sharks struggled as the worst team in the NHL.
With only 13 points and a team record of 19-54-9, Barabanov began to lose his passion for hockey. He shared with Responsible Gambling that although he appreciated his time in the NHL, the tough season with the 2023-24 Sharks dampened his enthusiasm.
“I dealt with injuries, and the team played very basic hockey,” Barabanov told RG.org. “You find yourself running around without the puck, questioning the purpose of it all. We didn’t even attempt to maintain possession… It was the most rudimentary style of play that diminishes a player’s spirit.”
Consistent losing can often erode an athlete’s passion for their game. After all, winning is the ultimate goal, and failing to be competitive can take a significant mental toll. This was the exact sentiment Barabanov experienced during his last year with the Sharks.
Despite the challenges, Barabanov reflected positively on his overall experience in the NHL.
“It was an exciting experience,” Barabanov remarked. “There was a sense of incompleteness since I really wished to participate in the playoffs and contest for the Stanley Cup… I found it enjoyable.”
Out of Barabanov’s 206 career games, 193 were played with the Sharks, while he played his first 13 games with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2021.
During his time with the Maple Leafs, Barabanov had to battle for a spot on the roster, managing only one assist before being traded to the Sharks.
Once in San Jose, Barabanov hit his stride, notching 15 goals and 32 assists for a total of 47 points in the 2022-23 season. Although the Sharks continued to struggle, Barabanov remained a consistent contributor.
The situation took a downturn in the following season, which contributed to Barabanov’s decision to return to the KHL. The former Shark is optimistic about his former team’s future success, especially with the excellent prospects they have in their system.
“I hope the team can complete their rebuild,” Barabanov stated. “They have many promising young players who have bright futures ahead.”
